Managing your Studies
Reading time: 2 - 3 minutes

The prospect of higher education can be a daunting time for students, especially for those who have come from outside London to study at City University. It is worse for students who come from overseas; they do not know how the English system works. As Muslims we should be thankful to our creator that we have been given this opportunity to increase our knowledge not only of worldly matters but matters of the religion via the provision of the Islamic society. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said it is obligatory for all believers to increase their knowledge, he did not specify what knowledge this should be. All believers should gain knowledge of both worldly and religious matters, this should be utilised in order to benefit others.
November has already arrived and the turbulent feelings accompanied by a roller-coaster ride have also come into full effect. Coursework, exam after exam and the dissertation that 3rd year students like myself face. Where did the time go I hear you ask, if I knew the answer to that I would be a genius. Many of us do not know where to begin, what question to answer and what book to read. Before going any further, take a breather and compose yourself.
When work seems to be coming from every angle, you do not know what to do. Basically the best thing I can tell you is not to panic and to your best to stay relaxed. We should already be drinking a lot of water but when you are stressed drink more, take regular breaks, have a cup a tea and most importantly stay awake. The worst thing you can do is pretend to work when your brain is half dead. Trust me I know, I have done two years of my degree.
I know the advice I have given you is very simplistic and general but remember there are no quick tricks in doing well in coping with your studies. At the end of the day we all have to do our own work. Just stay relaxed and remember to constantly ask for help from Allah. Make dua and inshaAllah you will be successful in your degree. We are fortunate that we have been given this opportunity to increase our knowledge and surely we should appreciate the prospect of learning.
