Lose weight now, ask me how – Ramadan is here!

Reading time: 2 - 3 minutes

Get the rations out, deep fry those Samosa’s and get yourself ready for a few marathon nights at the mosque – the blessed month is here. And as usual, many of us are left unprepared – only to wake up one autumnal morn to the sound of that very first Ramadan alarm. 4am – Heavens. I didn’t even realise 4 had an AM. With the new found knowledge of the 12 hour clock fully understood, - you trundle down into the kitchen, rustle up a quick breakfast (with Weetabix being the cereal of choice!) and wait anxiously for Fajr.

Still half asleep, the Fajr has been read and you are free to make your way back to the comfort of your bed. Bliss.

Sound familiar? – I bet it does! What with assignments, exams and part-time jobs at Tesco to worry about, our most important month of the year take’s a back seat. Something to be completed – something to get over – a chore. It’ll be over soon – and soon enough, we can get back to our mid-afternoon Subway sandwich – with extra olives.

But is this really the way to spend Ramadan? Looking forward to it’s completion? Looking forward to the day of Eid?

Our pious predecessors spent 6 months (that isn’t a typo) preparing for Ramadan! Such is the importance and blessings of this month. Should we not strive to do the same? Should we not strive, in the path of Allah, to take as much out of this blessed month as possible?

Abu Huraira related that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. And he who passes Lailat al-Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven (Bukhari, Muslim).

Ramadan is a blessing from Allah. It is something we must take advantage of. Strive, as always, to do good, for the good we do in Ramadan – be it reading the Quran, praying at the mosque or helping the Islamic Society with a generous donation (hint hint!), you will be rewarded many times over inshaalah.
