Prayer #1

Reading time: 2 - 2 minutes

In the Name of Allah, Oft Forgiving, Most Ready to Appreciate

Assalaamu’alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

“The words of the hadith continue***: ‘And God, Most High, enjoins prayer upon you. When you pray, do not turn away, for God faces His servant in prayer as long as he does not turn away.”

In prayer, one may turn away in two ways: with his heart and with the eyes - and both are proscribed. God remains before His servant in prayer as long as the servant stains in the direction of his prayer. But if the servant turns away with his heart or his eyes, then God turns away. When the Prophet [saw] was asked about turning away in prayer, he replied, ‘It is a robbery which the Devil perpetrates against a servant’s prayer.’ And it is related that God says, ‘[Do you turn] towards [something] better than Me? [Do you turn] towards [something] better than Me?’

This is the first of five parts insha’Allah; a set of SHORT posts on salaah that are long overdue, and I seek refuge in Allah from my own miserliness, laziness and conceit.

***Part of a longer hadeeth narrated by Imaam at-Tirmidhi [rahimahullah] and Imaam Ahmad [rahimahullah] on the authority of al-Harith al-Ash’ari, regarding the Oneness of Allah, prayer, fasting, charity, and remembrance of Him [swt].  [For the sake of brevity, it has not been quoted here].
