Islamophobic Attacks on Campus
Reading time: 5 - 8 minutes
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the One Who bestows Mercy
Alhamdulillaah.
There have been numerous attacks against Muslim students at CITY UNIVERSITY CAMPUS beginning this Monday (2nd November 2009), from local thugs, including three stabbings (against Muslims) on Thursday (5th November 2009) around Angel Station area. On Thursday, the thugs damaged the recently refurbished Gloucester Building entrance by hurling rocks and bricks at it, targetting the Muslim students that are stuck inside the glass cage.
The Muslims students of City University only stood firm to defend themselves against these brutal attacks and do not consider any attacks in revenge.
- Fear Allaah and place your trust in Allaah wherever you are, and know that Allaah will never abandon the Muslims and the trials we face will only make us stronger and united. We win both ways. Alhamdulillaah.
- Please be cautious and go home early and in groups; never split or head off on your own.
- Sisters are encouraged not to be around University after dark; if you can, rather you should head home before Maghrib, through open roads, or request that your family pick you up.
- Although attacks are against Muslims; non-Muslims are also encouraged to take care of themselves and be cautious of any suspicious behaviour. Our concern is not restricted to Muslim welfare only.
- Make sure to let the University know of your concerns regarding the security of the Muslim students on campus.
The University is encouraged to add more security cameras and place more security that cover the entire area, as the Gloucester Building entrance is surrounded by small alleyways/roads, and it is VERY risky for students to leave the building as the vicious thugs can attack from any and every hidden corner (and they have). The current, ONE, camera does not even record anything beyond (inside) the entrance! The attackers (and amongst them the stabber) also attacked four Muslims (victims) right outside Social Sciences building (they gathered their crew of pests right at its entrance) and NO security guards came to the Muslims’ aid, and they were just sitting inside.
The Muslims at City University only seek to reconcile and forgive and forget what is happening, and the next step of reconciliation is for the attackers to take.
More updates will be added tonight inshaa’Allaah.
[Please pray for the welfare of the brothers and sisters around the World and at our university]
Allaah will never disgrace us!
Remember the words of our Ameer, our Ustaadh and our brother in Islaam just a week ago (28.10.09) during the ‘Aqeedah (Mandatory Belief/Creed of a Muslim) course at this very university, when he had unknowingly trained us for what befell us in this week of vicious, malevolent attacks… Allaah prepares us as He wills and Allaah loves the believers, the righetous, the pious and Allaah will never disgrace us - His slaves - up till the Day, when there will be no shade except His Shade. Allaahu Akbar.
We ask Allaah to increase our eemaan and make us of those who think nothing but ‘good of Him, the most High’. Aameen.
Download audio (right click and ’save target as’): Allaah Will Never Disgrace Us!
Want to support us? Support the needy!
How can you support us? You could help us defend ourselves against these thugs; but the brothers at City will appreciate it more if you help us complete what we had started on the very day of the attack.
That day - 2nd of November 09 - was the initiation of our Charity Week, where we intended to raise the remaining £100,000 to complete three medical aid projects in India, Pakistan and Somalia, which a couple of Islamic Societies had started last year on behalf of UWT.
The whole mood was ruined and shattered by a series of events and these thugs that were waiting outside after Maghrib to prey on the Muslims.
Qaddarullaah, of the three who were injured on Monday, two of them were the organizers of Charity Week ‘09 for City University and the third was our Ameer. Nevertheless these brothers still came in during the second day, with their broken skulls and continued with their noble deed, with the intent to please none but Allaah; helping their brothers and sisters in Islaam.
The cries of those poor, homeless, orphaned, widowed, oppressed are louder than our cries and their injuries more severe.
Pray for them thrice as much as you pray for us and give them your support as they are more in need of it than us. WaAllaahi this will be a great, noble support indeed, in the Path of Allaah azza wa jall.
Help us by helping them; defend us by defending them. One Ummah; One Body. Heal their pain and you will heal us inshaa’Allaah.

Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
If it is deemed appropriate, then I make the following additions insha’Allah:
1stly guys - turn to Allah and make plentiful du’aa [supplication], make tawbah and repent to Allah, put your trust firmly in Allah, and know that Allah will NEVER abate His slaves, so know, with a certainty, that however worried or concerned you are, victory is with Allah ALONE, and Allah WILL help.
I say repent to Allah because it may well be that Allah is testing us due to what our own hands have wrought, so turn to Him, and sincerely ask Him to forgive you and your brethren. Ameen.
2ndly - keep up your adkhaar, increase in your remembrance insha’Allah.
a) Recite over yourselves:
- Surah Faatihah, Ayat ul Kursi, the 4 Qul, the last 2 ayaat from Surah Baqarah [2:285-286]. << Read the translations and subhan’Allah you’d be amazed at how much these verses reaffirm your faith. Walhamdulillah.
b) coupla du’aa’s:
- Laa ilaaha illah anta subhaanaka innee kuntu minadh-dhaalimeen.
Translation: There is no God worthy of worship but you, Glory be unto You, truly I have been from amongst the wrongdoers. This is the du’aa of Yunus alayhissalaam, known as the relief from distress.
- Bismillahil-lathee laa yadhurru ma’as-mihi shay’un fil-’ardhi wa laa fis-samaa’i wa Huwas-Samee’ul ‘Aleem.
Translation: In the Name of Allah, Who with His Name nothing can cause harm in the earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. This is the du’aa of Khalid bin Waleed, and he read this before drinking poison..and no harm came to him. Subhan’Allah! [Please dont try that at home!!!] It wards off calamities, so make lotsa use of it insha’Allah.
Keep the shahaadah moist on your tongue - it is a relief for the heart, and the best form of remembrance.
My apologies - I don’t have the time to write down the immense benefits of each of these du’aa’s and the surahs etc - but this is stuff that I personally turn to when..you know =/
Khair, there is lotsa other stuff you can use, but really the Faatihah and Ayat ul Kursi: HANG ON TO THEM!
3rdly - SISTERS & BROTHERS!! It is my humble opinion, that unless you deem it absolutely IMPERATIVE, you refrain from being at University today, or for late lectures on Monday etc… Just until things blow over a little bit. Allah will help, WE KNOW THAT, so sabrun jameel, things will get better.
But in the mean time, the more of you [esp sisters] that there are, the more of a hindrance you are to the brothers who masha’Allah tabarak’Allah, are putting their lives at risk to look out for you.
May Allah have mercy upon them and accept their struggle, Ameen ya Rabb.
4thly - As for writing to the University, then I strenuously recommend that everyone voice their concerns - at the end of the day we’re students just like everyone else, and when we come to Uni they should be facilitating us - ESP if we’re being attacked by a group of hoodlums.
Just wanted to know - who’s the best person to raise this with? Vice Chancellor?
FINALLY - GIVE CHARITY! Charity removes calamities, and it’s Charity Week =) Keep your trust in Allah alone, because everything that comes to you, everything is from Allah, and so relief is from Allah, help is from Allah, and victory is with Allah. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make immense du’aa for the brothers that are literally putting themselves at risk daily, and their families. May Allah increase them in rank and honour them all. Ameen.
May Allah have mercy on us, forgive us and recitify our affairs for us, Ameen.
Indeed Allah is a witness over us, and Allah knows best.
In the care of Allah [swt],
Wassalaamu’alaikum wa rahmatullah
P.S - PLEASE keep us updated, esp about the well being of the brothers. May Allah envelope them and their families in peace and tranquility. Ameen.
SubhanAllaah
are the brothers who got stabbed ok?
Yes, alhamdulillaah.
SubhanAllah
Bismilliah wasalaat wasalaam alaa’ ashraf al anbiya’ wal mursaleen,
An update inshallah,
A few of the brothers had a meeting earlier this evening with senior figures within the university, and they are fully aware of the events of this week and are working to ensure the safety of the students and to bring an end to these incidents. The vice chancellor is aware of the problem and considers it a priority.
What I think you should know is that the Islington Police & the Clerkenwell Safer Neighbourhood Team know of the situation and have increased their numbers in the area, both uniformed and plain clothed. They have made a few arrests, but considering the vast numbers of attackers, this will have little numerical impact on them. If you see anything suspicious in the vicinity of the Gloucester building, then have no hesitation in contacting the University Security or the Police. The phone number for the Clerkenwell Police Team is 0207 421 0218, but in an emergency always call 999.
As for University Security, their patrols will increase as will their general awareness of the issue, and we have had assurances that between the hours of 3.30pm and 7pm (subject to change as prayer times alter) there will be at least one security officer at the Gloucester building. Regardless of this additional security, I urge you all to follow the instructions of the Ameer, for sisters to be on their way home by 4pm latest.
If as a result of missing days this week or early next week, any coursework deadlines, or examinations have been missed or significantly affected, then please inform the Ameer or Ameerah, and the Dean of Students has confirmed that they will accept these as extenuating circumstances.
Finally, as the sister has mentioned, please increase in your adhkaar, and remember that Allah is the Protector and Guardian of the believers. Pray for the health of our injured brothers, and remember that these events are but a fitnah, so turn back to your Lord with humility.
We pray that Allah restores the power and glory of the Muslims, and bestows His mercy upon us, and forgives us our numerous sins. Ameen.
Wasalaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah
Jazak’Allahu khairan for the updates.
As for what the brother has mentioned, then if you guys haven’t already checked, check your uni emails - the Vice Chancellor has emailed the entire University regarding yesterday’s events and what they intend to do.
Speaking for myself, I’m still leaning towards writing to them, and i think this would be of benefit - but will see insha’Allah.
2 things insha’Allah - a) your victory is with Allah, your success is from Him, so don’t become negligent over your own safety because you think people are patrolling the area. it’s necessary that you take precautionary measures [sorry i only reiterate this for the academics fretting over deadlines..it aint worth it!]
b) maghrib is at 4.30ish these days. For many of you it takes you atleast half an hour to get home, so please plan in advance and ensure you’re safely home in good time for maghrib. so if that means leaving at 3 or whatever - do so. as the brothers have said, deadlines etc can be catered for in due course insha’Allah.
and allah knows best.
assalaam all
The message from the Vice-Chancellor:
With all due respect to the Vice-Chancellor… provocative or not, walking alone will only result in getting “jumped” and stabbed by the gang of pests. Walking together keeps them away. On Thursday, these stabbings happened - and Allaah knows best - only because the police advised everyone to split-up and go home and it is only then did a small group of brothers get attacked with fireworks packed with pebbles (gives similar desired effect as putting ball bearings in a bomb) and stabbed.
However, keeping the Vice-Chancellor’s advice in mind, the Muslim students will only be in the large group when going home (away from the university campus) and traveling towards their departure destination inshaa’Allaah.
I have my own qualms with what the VC said…
1stly - if it was “racially aggravated”, then surely, irrespective of whether you’re alone or with others, you’re gonna get picked on.
2ndly - to reiterate what was stated above - there’s safety in numbers.
3rdly - i think it’s being downplayed a little bit. i understand the VC doesnt want to cause unnecessary alarm amongst staff and students, but at the end of the day, a people in a vicinity, namely muslims using the Gloucester Builiding were targets this past week. i think uni needs to step their game up, even for the non prayer room using muslim-looking people who are students at the uni, having lectures in the law building..they could be just as prone to attack.
but people can’t and shouldn’t have to live in fear, certainly not because of a group of hoodlums. so what’s to be done? are there any meetings that uni officials are having over the weekend? or can this wait till monday for them?
Bismillahir rahmaanir raheem
i have just heard todays khutbah. inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’oon.
i make one humble plea, and i literaly beg and plead with you, please please please keep us posted about the well being of our brothers. if there is absolutely anything we can do for them, brothers if you are reading this then be my witness, if there is anything we can do for you, by allah we readily strive to support you and your family through your hardship. please do not be shy of asking us insha’allah. may allah have mercy on you and make magnificent your reward, ameen ya rabb.
in addition, ya ameer ul mu’mineen, it is imperative that the university be contacted. i urge that all the muslims make their voices heard, all the muslims that are regularly using the prayer room, i urge that they all ask what the univeristy is doing for them. i say this not out of fear for myself, not out of fear for any of the muslims in fact, because i know that what allah brings to them, whatever it is, it will be by His Decree and in it there will be immense wisdom. and i know, i know with a certainty that victory is from Him, so i have no fear in that regard. and all praise is due to allah alone.
nonetheless i make this request because these happenings affect all the muslims, and even the non muslims who are using the social sciences and gloucester buildings; it is within their remit that they should expect to be in a safe environment, that they should have a university that is catering for their needs, looking out for them in every way possible. so i think it imperative that we raise concerns with the university, because if we do not, then i fear that many people will suffer unnecessary harm or distress because the university will not see the gravity of the situation. these people have a right to know what guarantees their uni can give them, they have a right to be concerned and they should make their voices heard.
and success is with allah alone, and our reliance is upon him, most high.
aameen Ya Rabb.
Assalamu Alaykum warahmatulahi wabarakatuh my fellow brothers and sisters in Islam.
SubhanAllah I heard about the attacks by word of mouth,I just wanted to show my support to my brothers/sisters at city uni. There is absolutely no excuse to this violence and InshaAllah Allah will deal and expose these thugs! My sincere duas are with all of you and your families..I pray that Allah and remember we are one body if one feels pain we all suffer so please do keep us updated and as sis Dust stated I urge you to let us know if there is anything, anything at all that we can possibly do…please keep in mind that Allah azza wa jall tests those whom He loves..so see this as a sign that He loves YOU!..May He SWT keep us united and strong against all evils..ameen
I wish there was something else I could do then just a few words but plz once again do keep us updated and let us know if there is anything that other universities can do to help.
I’ll leave you to contemplate ofn the words of the Sustainer and Nourisher,The Mighty and Majestic.
“If good touches you, it distresses them; but if harm strikes you, they rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear Allah, their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allah is encompassing of what they do.” [Aal `Imran 3:120]
Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.’” [Yusuf 12:90]
….May Allaah protect us and grant us strength to stand up for our brothers and sisters, aameen!
Aameen
Just a note to the City sisters, although Our Respected Ameer has ordered us to leave university by 4pm, please do not wait around University till 4pm for no apparant reason.
If you finish your lectures and classes, please do not ‘hang around’ or wait till 4pm, wAllaahu A’lam.
Also, realistically speaking, many sisters have a journey to their homes of upto an hour, and if that is the case, sisters need to leave well before 4pm to get home for maghrib.
As Our Ameer has said, even if you have lectures/seminars/labs after 4pm, you have to leave.
Please sisters, listen to and obey your Ameer and by the Will and Might of Allaah, you will not go wrong.
wAllaahu A’lam.
In the Name of Allah, Who with His Name nothing can cause harm in the earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
News is spreading and the people are becoming saddened by the plight of the Muslims, and more so, the wounded brothers at City University. For those of you who are grieved by what has befallen us, then I ask you this, why do you grieve? I ask you, were the prophets not tried with the severest trials?
I ask you, what was the state of Ayyub alayhis salaam, when Allah tried him by taking away his health, wealth, offspring and everything else? He was rejected by the people and he and his wife were cast out to a slum because his skin would peel and stench emanated from his body. Yet he remained patient, constantly praising Allah with his tongue. He remained patient and did not become grieved. And then his beloved wife, his faithful companion; it was only when he became aware that she had sold her hair to feed herself and him, it was only then that he supplicated to Allah, and even then he did not complain. He said My Lord, verily distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. So I ask you, did Allah not respond to Ayyub alayhis salaam?
I ask you then, to look to the grief of Yaqoob alayhis salaam when he lost his beloved son Yusuf. He became blinded in his anguish, and as for the beautiful prophet Yusuf, he became wrongfully accused and imprisoned. How beautiful was the patience of Yaqoob, and did Allah not respond to his call? Did Allah not give Yusuf wealth and honour and esteem amongst the Aziz and his people? After their trial, Allah bought Yaqoob and Yusuf an abundance of ease.
I ask you then, to look to the trial of Yunus alayhis salaam, cast out into the belly of the whale. Did the cries of Yunus from the depths of the oceans not reach the Throne of Allah? Subhan’Allah, I ask you, did the angels not intercede for Yunus alayhis salaam?
In the same way, rest assured dear brothers and sisters, that Allah will hear our cries, and Allah will respond to our supplications. If the prick of a thorn is an expiation of the believers’ sins, then I ask you, what about the droplets of blood that our brothers have shed? Are these not an expiation for them insha’Allah? Are they not a means by which Allah will exalt and honour them for defending their brethren in Islaam? For every trial and every hardship that befalls the believer is full of blessings. Every trial and every hardship is a means by which the believers’ hearts are purified, their sins cleansed, and their status with Allah is refined. Allah does not test us except to have us turn back to Him, to seek Him, to make us of the patient, those who rely upon Him and only Him, who call on Him in our deepest, darkest hour. Allah does not test us, except to remind us of Him. So know, know with a certainty in your heart, that the affliction of the believer is a means by which he increases in nearness to His Lord. So do not be sad, and do not be grieved. Allah WILL help.
In saying that, dear brothers and sisters in islaam, in all honesty this matter has left me entirely perplexed. When news reached me yesterday, and as my half-asleep brain tried to make sense of the flurry of text messages I was sifting through, a sense of worry overcame me. My concern was for the wounded brothers, yes. My concern was for the Muslims at our university, yes. But my greatest concern was for me, for me as one component of the body that forms the Ummah of Muhammad [saw]. As I read the initial post, a sense of guilt overwhelmed me, and I began to wonder that maybe we’re looking at this all wrong.
You know ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab [ra], he once advised Sa’ad bin Abi-Waqqas as such:
“Fear your sins more than you fear your enemy, as your sins are more dangerous to you than your enemy. We Muslims are only victorious over our enemy because their sins outnumber ours, not for any other reason. If our sins were equal to those of our enemy, then they would defeat us due to their superior numbers and resources.”
I wonder the same thing now. I’m wondering, that before we rush off to blame the disbelievers, before we rush off to blame the lack of policing or security, I’m wondering if we need to point that same finger to ourselves. You know in reading the initial post yesterday, I thought, maybe it’s my sins that have brought the people that I love under harm. I do not say this out of piety, because I assure you, I am not pious. Rather I say this to you, knowing and secretly thanking Allah the Exalted for covering my many many sins. But I say this to you, fearful, nonetheless, of what our own hands have wrought. You know it was the advice of ‘Ali [ra] that:
“…The one who rectifies that which is between him and Allah, Allah will rectify that which is between him and the people.”
So maybe it is time that we set aright that which is between us and Allah. Maybe it is time that we turn to Allah in humility, seeking forgiveness for all the wrong that we have accumulated against ourselves, repenting for every sin that we have piled up to topple us on the Day of Judgement. You know that same Qur’aan you quote when referring to the disbelievers, it is that very same Book that warns of the consequences of our own sins. So maybe it’s time we look inside ourselves, and make amends for our own heedlessness.
You may disagree with me. You may say that no, we have done nothing wrong, we are completely blame-free and this is a completely and utterly unprovoked attack. Maybe so. Nonetheless, none of us are sinless. And if you foolishly think that you have no sin to repent for, then that very notion may well require repentance itself. So I leave you, asking myself and you this: is the one who sincerely humbles himself before Allah, is he EVER from amongst the losers?
—————————–
ALL that is good and correct is from Allah. May Allah accept this reminder from my heart, and have it reach yours. May Allah make me of the sincerely repentant, and accept my repentance. And we ask Allah to increase in our trust in Him, and to have us rely upon Him and only Him in times of ease and hardship. Ameen ya Rabb.
Assalam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh
Subhnallah I do not attend this university but the news of these attacks has reached me in a state of shock.
Im sure I speak on behalf of the brothers at Queen Mary university, and I just wanted to say if there is anything that we can do to help you guys out, then I’m sure the brothers here are more then willing to help. Of course all of you, especially the brothers who have been attacked, are in our dua and we make dua that Allah SWT grants them a speedy recovery and we pray Allaah Azza Wa Jal grants you peace and security in as well as outside of campus.
With regards to the brothers who have been badly hurt, please keep us updated about their progress.
We ask Allaah Azza Wa Jal that He grants us all istiqamah and sabr during these times of test, and we pray to the Most High One Azza Wa Jal that He deals with those responsible for these cowardly attacks, Ameeen Ya Rabbal Aalameeen.
Your Brother Hammad
Asalaam,
I just wanted to say that I cannot stress how important it is for all sisters to heed the Ameer when he says that it is prohibited to stay in uni after 4. Please all sisters follow this order and circulate this message so it reaches those sisters who do not come prayer room/ aren’t members of the isoc and may not know of this message. The longer sisters stay in uni, the more dangerous it will be for us and for the brothers. Please respect the safety of all of us and yourself and do as the Ameer has ordered.
InshaAllah this thing will blow over, Just have Faith and trust In Allah and keep on making duaa for all of us and especially ask for forgiveness of any and all sins that we have ever committed. InshaAllah Allah will answer our prayers. Ameen.
May the peace & Blessings of Allah SWT be upon you all,
I just want to say that you have the support of every single brother and sister at the University from the University of Wesminster. We won’t just talk the talk, we’ll walk the walk every step of the way with our brothers and sisters. What matters is we’re Muslim, We’re one Ummah. United we stand, Divided we fall. Do not lose hope, for Allah SWT has promised victory to the believers.
Here are some verses from the Quran, I pray they give sakeena to each and every heart.
(Remember) when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying):
“I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other(following one another) in succession.”Allâh made it only as glad tidings, and that your hearts be at rest therewith. And there is no victory except from Allâh. Verily, Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
(Surah Anfal 8:9-10)
Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, “Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them.” But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: “Allâh (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and? He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us).” 174. So they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allâh. No harm touched them; and they followed the good Pleasure of Allâh. And Allâh is the Owner of Great Bounty
(Al-e Imran 3:173-4)
It is only Shaitân (Satan) that suggests to you the fear of his Auliyâ’ [supporters and friends (polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh and? in His Messenger, Muhammad SAW)], so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers.
(Al-e Imran 3:175)
Also any hurt that touches the believers even if it is the prick of a thorn expiates the sins of the believer.
Whatever has happened will never weaken the Muslims, but this will inevitably make you all stronger inshallah.
May Allah SWT protect you all and grant you strength Ameen
Just don’t lose hope and everything will be ok inshallah.
Du’a is our weapon, always hold close to it. Allah SWT tests those He loves.
Assalaam alaykum wr wb
Excellent advice given mashallah..I agree with what sister dust is said about looking @ our own sins and trying to rectify ourselves. Also brothers of the ISOC, as a sister i just want to say Jazakallah Khair for everything you’ve done and are willing to do for us to ensure that we are safe, may Allah protect and preserve you and give you the best in this world and the hereafter Aameen. We are standing by you so if you need anything please do let us know..and sisters we need to get ourselves home and not be a burden for the brothers..
Please make every sister aware of this..remember the ummah in your dua’s
W’alaykum assalaam wr wb..
Couple of questions inshallah:
1) Many muslims who have heard of the incidents and are making dua for the brothers and City uni muslims would like to know of an update concerning the brothers attacked, as there have been numerous diffferent things being said about their current condition
2) Have the committee members organised a seperate room for salah? If not, i ask they please do, considering that Maghrib is getting earlier and as it is the Law building is a little away from the main uni building, so for safety reasons, it may be a suggestion to get a room near the chapel room, located in the main building. Brothers would also not have to wait for sisters to leave at 4pm. I only ask that the committee do this as it seems you do not want isocers doing their own thing and we want to maintain unity of the isoc. Please consider it if not already done.
@ UCS
1) All brothers who had been injured, are recovering and they are fine alhamdulillaah (including those three who were stabbed). May Allaah accept all our du’aa’.
2) The University offered the brothers a room in Northampton Square Main Building, called the ‘Northampton Suite’ to pray Maghrib on Friday. As for the arrangements on Monday, we will keep everyone updated via the website (and after Dhuhr/’Asr announcements) inshaa’Allaah. Nobody will be allowed to go to the Prayer Room either, and rather directed to the new venue (TBC), from where all brothers will head towards their departure destination together inshaa’Allaah. These arrangements are NOT for sisters, as they should not be in university at that time.
BaarakAllaahu feekum
In addition, I also want to sincerely thank the Brothers for everything they have done and will do in the future for our safety InshaAllah. JazakAllah khair and I pray that you all are blessed with Allah’s forgiveness and protection, InshaAllah. Ameen. But please, please do take care of yourselves InshaAllah and please let us know how the brothers who sustained injuries are doing. JazakAllah
Assalaamu alaikum.
indeed it’s deeply distressing to hear about whats happening at city. I humbly request all the brothers NOT to take ANY aggressive reaction even if they throw stones at you as this will only provoke more violence.
I think the sisters should make use of the mutli-religion room (located somewhere in the main building) even at other times than maghrib for next couple of weeks until things are calmed down inshAllah.
Also, I urge the University that maybe in long-terms they could arrange a large prayer room facility inside the main building as Gloucester building is located right next where these thugs reside and hang around. It will definitely be productive for both the University and muslim students coz I can tell you of personal experience that a lot of the muslims choose to go City because of the prayer room facilities and the isoc as a whole. One of the main reasons why I chose City to study was when I say the prayer room because for us muslims, guarding the prayer (5 times a day) is the most fundamental part in our lives!
stay calm and just be patient!
May Allah protect you and bestow His mercy upon you all.
p.s. can someone please post email adds of the top uni staff members so that we could all write our plea to them. thanks.
Have any media sources been informed- namedly islam channel / press tv / al jazeera?
Informing them may get more muslims active in denouncing the attacks and the Uni authority may understand that it has a duty of care to protect all students who are paying for their organisation.
Assalaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatu,
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’oon… the attacks have shocked us all regardless of whether we attend this university or not. SubhanAllah there is absolutley no excuse for such violence, i pray that the brothers attacked make a quick recovery… they and their families are in our dua’as.
As eveyone has said, if there is anything we can do to help - you have the support of many ISocs alhamdulillah. Please do keep us informed of the progress of those brothers who were injurged and sisters please do try to go home early. Your pain is our pain and we wish for no harm for any of our brothers and sisters in Islam.
May Allah Azza wa jal protect you all from any harm and make this a means of purification for you all.. and raise your ranks in this dunya and the akhira. Ameen ya Rabb.
Asslamalykum
im a student currently on my placement and i have heared about what has happened.
I just want to say Alhamdullilah there were no life threatening injuries.
inshallah the brothers recover quickly and this doesnt occur again.
Always Make Du’aa and stay steadfast
i wish the brothers a speedy and healthy recovery…inshallah ameen
Muslims unite
one ummah
one life
one love
one goal
In The Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Entirely merciful
As-salaamua’laykum
Firstly jazaka’Allah khairun to all the duas, reminders and advice, may Allah reward you all insha’Allah.
Just to reiterate and remind insha’Allah, that security aswell as the police have been notified, so there is plain clothed police around the area.
A lot of the things I say may just be a reminder, but insha’allah reminders are what we all need no matter how many times we hear it.
Now brothers, please, it is absolutely vital that we remain patient, because Allah loves those who are patient and victorious will be the ones who are patient and cling on to the Qur’aan and Sunnah, there are many well known ahadith and Qur’anic ayahs regarding patience. So Brothers it is imperative that we Listen to EVERYTHING to what the ameer says or to those brothers who the ameer has given authority to, so try not to make noise, or cause a scene, because the longer the brothers stay around the area and make noise, it will only draw more attention and make matters worst.
Now brothers mainly, but also for sisters and everyone else, remember, as mentioned by the ameer countless times and other brothers, we as muslims do not want to cause problems and fights. We as muslims do not look for trouble, nor go out seeking to fight, however, when and if they come, then we should have Full trust in Allah, and fight to protect our deen and the honor of our brothers, this is a test. To those brothers who were involved, are probably thinking “ahh I should have done this” or “what If we did this” do not fall into matters of IF, what has happened has happened, qadar-Allah, and whatever did happen we should look back on it and reflect and increase in remembrance of Allah. Do not fall into regret for you did what you can to the best of your ability and Insha’Allah you will be rewared for whatever you did to help your brothers.
And to those sisters who asked if there is anything you could do for the brothers, then you should do Dua, and listen to the orders of the Ameer, because we fear for your safety, this is very important right now insha’Allah.
Do not be disheartened by the event, as the sister previously mentioned, we should use it to reflect what we are doing our selves, and our sins, and insha’Allah everyone will have noticed that we are slowly becoming more and more closer, and sticking together, the way we As Muslims should be.
I pray to Allah that he keeps us all in the best of eemaan, and that we remain to the Qur’aan and sunnah, that we love and hate for the sake of Allah, and Worship Allah alone, and that Allah forgives our sins and brings us together as muslims, and May Allah reward those brothers who fought to protect their brothers, May Allah have mercy on All the muslims across the world, and give our sisters patience and strength, and may Allah reward and bestow his mercy upon our ameer, and to protect him and give him strength. Ameen.
All good that I have said is from Allah, and anything bad is from the evil of my self and the cursed shaytaan.
There is a lot more that could be said, but it can’t be stressed enough that, we have to stick together. No brother, or sister should be left alone.
As-salaamua’laykum warahamatullah
Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem. It is heartwhelming to see the support of the ummah and the unity, may Allaah keep us sincere in all we say and do, aameen.
For those that don’t know, City ISoc had only finshed their 3 part Aqeedah series last friday, walhamdulilaah, delivered by none other than Our Respected Ameer.
One of the things we learnt and was drilled into us is that everything is decreed in The Prescribed Book, and thus it is easier for us to cope with it and accept.
“Verily, We have created all things with Qadar (Divine Preordainments of all things before their creation as written in the Book of Decrees Al?Lawh Al?Mahfooz)[al-Qamar 54:49]
“No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but it is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al?Lawh Al?Mahfooz) before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allaah”[al-Hadeed 57:22]
“but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allaah’s Leave”
[al-Baqarah 2:102]
Allaah has allowed for this to happen for a reason, and there is hikmah behind everything He decrees, we may not see it now, but Allaah is the Best of planners, and Most Merciful to His salves, He is our Source of Peace, and our Guardian, He is the Most Just in all He does, The Highest, and the Greatest, The Watchful, and the Responder to all our Prayers, The Loving One, The one that Witnesses all, The Restorer, the Giver of life and The Taker of Life, and there is many more names.
Like the brother has said above, please listen to and obey the ameer, both brothers and sisters, the situation has to be dealt with hikmah.
We Praise and Thank Allaah in all circumstances.
He knows and we know not, He has choosen this test specifically for CityIsoc, I Pray they get through it, holding on to the Qur’aan and Sunnah, maintaing the unity and brother and sisterhood, and that this is a means of strenthening them, purifying them, furthering them in their Daw’ah, and another means of taking the ISoc from success to success, aameen Ya Rabb.
As salaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah,
Oh Ummah of Muhammad (salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), make dua’ for the Muslims at City university and remember them in your Salah, for no calamity is placed on a believer except that it makes them stronger. May these incidents be a source of strength for us Muslims and let us know that Allah will never disgrace His religion or the Believers. Stand out and speak out, have courage and do not be afraid of who you are. Allah has chosen us and these trials and calamaties show us that truly Allah azza wa jal has not forgotton about the Muslims at City university, it is a sign that Allah truly truly loves us. May we be united and may we be raised together on the day of Judgement, and may Allah unite us all in the Gardens of al Firdous, aameen ya rabbal ‘alameen.
Surah at Taubah- 51. Say: “Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allâh has ordained for us. He is our Maulâ (Lord, Helper and Protector).” And in Allâh let the believers put their trust.”
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger s.a.w said “He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the suffering of the day of Resurrection, and he who finds relief for one who is hard pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the hereafter, and who conceals the faults of a muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the bak of his brother, and he trads the path in search of knowledge, Allah makes that path easy, leading to paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah(mosques) and recite the book of Allah and they learn and teach the Quran (among themselves) there would descend upon them the tranquility”
Sahi Muslim book 35, hadith #6518
I am not a member of the City Islamic Society however I would like to convey my regards and express the regret I feel to those who have suffered from these vicious attacks. Such violence is completely uncalled for and my thoughts and best wishes are with those who have been affected. I will try my best to raise awareness of this and help bring about some changes to assure the security of students at City. The support each of you are showing on this web page is inspirational.
Thank you very much for your kind comments and your efforts to provide a safer environment for students to study in. Your support means a LOT to us. If Allaah wills, these events will not continue to happen… and we pray for you the best in this world and in the Next.
SubhanAllah. Very inspirational. This is how the unity of the Ummah should be at all times. We should feel the pains of our brothers and sisters. We should be there for their needs and help them every step of the way. May Allah give us the strength to do this. Ameen. Like others have already stated, if there is anything we can do, just let us know and InshaAllah, we’ll do what we can to the best of our ability.
our duas are with you!
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
Firstly, we praise and thank Allah [swt] for easing the pain of our brothers, and for granting them relief. We ask Allah to continue to shower His abundant blessings upon our brothers, their families and all the Muslims at City and beyond, may Allah have mercy on each and every one of you and make lofty your home in Paradise. Ameen ya Rabb.
Then, and i speak solely for myself - so let me clearly stipulate that these may not necessarily be the views of the Ameer of City Isoc, the Headsister, the brothers or of any of the ISoccers - but here’s what i think insha’Allah:
I understand the overwhelming concern that the Muslims, ex-City or non-City have for our brethren. I understand that this issue is a cause for anxiety, for the pain of one brother is pain for all of us. I understand that if City ISoc holds to just one thing, it is the love for the Salaah. By Allah it was none other than my time here that instilled in me a love for my salaah, and made me realise that my standing before Allah is my time with Him, Most High. And all praise belongs to Allah, and again, all praise is for Allah.
Nonetheless, for our brothers and sisters who are making mention of going to the media, or suggesting that University Officials’ emails be put up here, then I’m afraid i totally and utterly disagree with your stance. By Allah, I have no doubt that you are sincere in what you intend, and may Allah reward you immensely. But for those of you thinking along those lines, I ask that you think again.
It is my humble opinion, and indeed Allah [swt] knows best, but it is my humble opinion that the Muslims at City Isoc refrain from making this issue - what the sociologists would term - a moral panic.
Brothers and sisters in Islaam, yes we should not take this lying down, yes we should make our voices heard, yes we should be incredibly firm in making a stand against this calamity. But, and i hesistate in saying this, but i see no real benefit in causing a furore. I see no benefit in the media becoming involved - certainly not at this stage, and certainly not by the Muslims. Moreover, i see no benefit in the people who’ve left this university, or are no longer at the university, i see no benefit in them inundating the university with emotive emails revealing their concern. As i say, i have no doubt that you mean well, but this is not the manner in which things should be approached.
As you have all been informed, the University has been made aware. As has been reiterated, the University has said that there will be greater policing and security around the area. Now, our reliance is wholly and solely on Allah, so we shall not become lax and leave our affair in the care of the University, not at all. But, for the time being, I ask that we at least give the University a chance to act upon what they’ve said.
In the meantime, many of the sisters and I’m sure the brothers too, have been contemplating ways in which they can - as current students directly affected by this situation - approach the University officials. We have, and are, considering what we should do in terms of our lectures, and timetables, because believe it or not this does affect our learning too. We are mulling over ideas of what else we’d like to see done to guarantee our safety and security by the University, what measures we’d like to be taken and so forth. So be assured that we are working on it, and we will contact the University and make further requests and suggestions etc.
But for now, i feel it imprudent that the Muslims directly involved with the University rush into taking drastic measures, because it will make matters escalate unnecessarily, and to the detriment of the Muslims. So as for the media being contacted, or university officials’ emails being plastered on here, then i most certainly don’t consider that a wise idea, because I’m certain that it will affect the City Muslims more than anyone else. And Allah knows best.
Finally, i leave you with three verses of the Qur’aan, the first of which makes me feel ashamed of my relationship with Allah, the second of which reminds me of what i strive for, and the third of which soothes the heart.
“And when harm touches man, he invokes Us, lying down on his side, or sitting or standing. But when We have removed his harm from him, he passes on his way as if he had never invoked Us for a harm that touched him!” [Surah Yunus, ayah 12].
“If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah (Alone) let believers put their trust.” [Surah Al-Imraan, ayah 160].
In relation to the people of paradise:
“And they will say: “All the praises and thanks are to Allâh, Who has removed from us (all) grief. Verily, our Lord is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense).” [Surah Faatir, ayah 34].
All that is of benefit is from Allah Alone, and praise is for Him, most High. As for the errors, then they are all mine.
Indeed Allah is a witness over us, and Allah knows best.
May Allah have mercy on the Muslims being tried all over the world. Ameen. May Allah guide us and never forsake us, for as long as He is not angry with us, we do not care. Ameen. May Allah keep us united in the dunya, and reunite us in the Hereafter. Ameen ya Rabbil ‘alameen.
P.S - i should point out that if anyone desires to post in relation to this particular issue, addressing me, then insha’Allah i will not respond in any form. This was something that concerned me, and thus i made my view known, but i do not desire to discuss this further. if there is no benefit in this, then i request for my post to be deleted. jazak’allahu khairan.
Assalamu alaykum wr wb,
SubhanAllah this incident is an awful example of the increasing presence of Islamophobia. We need to make this issue come to light adequately and raise awareness.
I am currently on the editorial team of the London Student newspaper [Europe's largest student newspaper, for those unaware], and inshaAllah we will be covering the event in our news section for the coming issue. I would be grateful if an individual, perhaps someone from ISoc, who is clued up on the events could please get in touch with me asap so that I can discuss the events further and get some facts. I can be contacted on play.print@london-student.net. Alternatively, you can get in contact with the newspaper editor, Hilary, on editor@london-student.net.
JazakumAllah & Wassalam,
Sr Lubaaba
wa ‘alaykumus salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,
You will be contacted soon inshaa’Allaah, with information on what has been happening. BaarakAllaahu feek.
Bismillaah
“The eyes shed tears and the heart is grieved, but we will not say anything except which pleases our Lord.” (Prophet Muhammad, salallaahu ‘alayhi wassalaam)
Indeed our eyes have shed tears, the prayer room was flooded with tears after the friday khutbah; and indeed our hearts have grieved to what has happened to our brothers; but indeed Alhamdulillaah we have all taken this as a trial from Our Lord and no-one has said anything except which pleases Him (this is evident from evryone’s comments walhamdulillaah).
I would just like to say a big jazakumullaahu khairan katheeran to everyone for their support and du’aas. It’s truly amazing to see the strength of our brotherhood and sisterhood. This incident reminded me of what happened to Queen Mary ISoc when their prayer rooms where taken away. Not only did this affect the brothers and sisters at QM, but it affected EVERY brother and sister who was aware of their situation. It truly is true when our Beloved Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wassalam said ‘The Ummah is One Body, when one part of that body is hurting, the rest share in that pain!’
If anything, I think these incidents have brought us all closer together walhamdulillah, and hopefully it has been a means for all of us to come closer to Allaah and seek pardon for our numerous sins. May Allaah azza wa jal envelop all of us in His Mercy and Security, ameen thuma ameen.
Wassalamu ‘alaykum warahmatullah
as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu
I am not a student of the uni but would just like to saw i was in tears whilst listening to the khutbah. What can i say ? May Allah protect and preserve each one of us and give the brothers a speedy recovery. may Allah swt forgive us and guide us onto the right path and give us strength and courage. Ameen
Brother muwahhid’s post, i completely agree with. This is Islam and muslims under attack so if we don’t fight now then when will we ? All these years you have rightfully never harmed anyone or caused trouble. But now people are seeking to destroy us for what ? because of our religion! so defend it, brothers! remembers IT’S A 2 WAY VICTORY
QM isoc have been doing a well publicised campaign so if need be city can start one similar if need be ? I don’t know what other advice to give but i’m sure the ameer and co will think of something inshallah.
It is very important also sisters send out the message and be out on their way home by 4PM. use the main roads and do not hang about. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD TO ALL THE SISTERS
Assalam-o-Alaikum,
I am also not from City uni but a student of Warwick university and would like to send my sympathies to all those adversely affected by this horrendous situation. At the same time I strongly encourage that City university take every step necessary to protect its students, just like they would protect their own staff.
May Allah protect our brothers and sisters at City university from harm, Ameen.
Please contact Sarfraz, a Guardian journalist on this issue as he covered issues about Muslims before: saf_manzoor@yahoo.com
I trust that he’ll cover this issue insha’Allah.
It is important that the ISOC take all necessary and legal measures to protect its members, even it means resorting to the media and drawing attention. Safety of our brethren is at stake.
Wa salam
As salaam Alaikum,
Firstly my duas are with the injured brothers, their families and everyone related to them. May Allah protect us, guide us and give us the patience to overcome this attack we are facing, ameen.
I just wanted to mention that if possible media outlets, as one commentor has already mentioned, such as Islam Channel, al-Jazeera, Muslim News e.tc. should be informed of this attack which has happened so that insh’Allah it raises awareness amongst the Muslim community and to insh’Allah put pressure on the university to provide better security and protection for not only the Muslims on campus but the whole student population as these kind of attacks can affect anyone.
It is important that we as Muslims stick together during this time when Allah has decided to test and measure our degree of imaan and insh’Allah with sabr and islamic etiquitte, insh’Allah we will win and come out of this testing time stronger, with strengthened imaan and unity within the Muslim community on campus and in this dunya, ameen.
as-salaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh
waAllaahi, the brothers at city cannot express how much they appreciate your ongoing support and your beautiful words. May Allaah reward you all with the highest ranks in Paradise and join us there with you. Aameen.
BaarakAllaahu feekum
As a student from Goldsmiths.
Alhamdullilah the stab wounds were not fatal, and i pray no more situations like this arises.
Also The London student paper also want to cover this but they need a number or an email address so they can report with accuracy so i will be grateful if anyone from cityisoc can email studentnews@gmail.com to make sure it gets covered and that all students find out about this because at the moments its all word of mouth.
Thank You
Ameen
I urge you all to listen to the short clip added from the Aqeedah course!!
Aameen thumma Aameen.
as-salaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,
I have been thinking… how can you support us? You could help us defend ourselves against these thugs; but the brothers at City will appreciate it more if you help us complete what we had started on the very day of the attack.
That day - 2nd of November 09 - was the initiation of our Charity Week, where we intended to raise the remaining £100,000 to complete three medical aid projects in India, Pakistan and Somalia, which a couple of Islamic Societies had started last year on behalf of UWT.
The whole mood was ruined and shattered by a series of events, starting with some specific haters from within the university, to these thugs waiting outside after Maghrib to prey on the Muslims.

Your brother in Islaam.
Asalaam,
May Allah give us all strength, make us better Muslims, Make us more united, Make us more thankful, bestow us with His protection and His forgiveness InshaAllah, Ameen.
The Noble Qur’an - At-Tauba 9:51
Say: “Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Maula (Lord, Helper and Protector).” And in Allah let the believers put their trust.
The Noble Qur’an - Al-Qamar 54:53
And everything, small and big is written (in Al-Lauh Al-Mahfûz already beforehand i.e. before it befalls, or is done by its doer).
The Noble Qur’an - At-Takwir 81:28-29
To whomsoever among you who wills to walk straight, And you will not, unless (it be) that Allâh wills, the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinns and all that exists).
Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4:621, Narrated Abu Huraira
Allah’s Apostle said, “Adam and Moses argued with each other. Moses said to Adam, ‘You are Adam whose mistake expelled you from Paradise.’ Adam said to him, ‘You are Moses whom Allah selected as His Messenger and as the one to whom He spoke directly; yet you blame me for a thing which had already been written in my fate before my creation?’ ” Allah’s Apostle said twice, “So, Adam overpowered Moses.”
It has to never be forgotten that this was all written in our fates beforehand by almighty Allah and everthing that happens is by His will. So let us try to keep strong and not to fear no one but Allah. Ameen. (I sincerly hope that I can follow my own advice and fear no one but Allah, InshaAllah)
Asalaamualalykum and here is another verse from al - quran:
Fight them, and Allah will punish them by your hands, cover them with shame, help you (to victory) over them, and heal the breasts of the Believers (At-Tawba – 14)
Assalamualaikum wa Rahmatullah!
All this is very sad indeed. May Allah grant our brothers and sisters the the patience after such troubled incidents. Surely Allah (subhanhuwatala) tests the moi’min with trials and tribulations so that he may come even nearer to Him and indeed only Allah knows best!
Peace be on you
Wassalamu ‘alaykum warahmatullah
I was very touched by the khutbah and the brother really emphasised on the sisters leaving by 4PM and brothers leaving together after maghrib. So all the students please please listen and respect this decision. Also spread the word to those who might not have been there, who don’t want to listen and think everything is OK etc
Please keep us updated, we ask Allah to keep us strong and steadfast and make it a means of forgiveness for the brothers and sisters. aameen ya rabb.
Assalam Alaikum
To the Brothers of City University:
Ikhwaan if you need ANY help with regards to ANYTHING whatsoever, whether it be financial donations to help transport people home, or any assisstance in launching a campaign or publisizing these events, anything whatsoever ikhwaan, please approach the brothers at Queen Mary University, we will do whatever is in our means to support you and assist you.
Inshallah you will not find us to be like the people of Bani Israeel, who chose to sit back and told Musa (AS), …”Why dont you and you Lord go and fight , while we shall sit here and wait for you!”. No, Inshallah you will find us to be standing shoulder and shoulder by your side, to your right and to your left like the people of the Ansaar on the great day of Badr.
So please let us know ya ikhwaaan.
Jazakallaahu Khair
Hammad (on behalf of QM brothers/sisters)
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
On the authority of Abdullah bin Abbas, who said : One day I was behind the prophet and he said to me:
“Young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice] : Be mindful of Allah, and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, ask of Allah; if you seek help, seek help of Allah. Know that if the Nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, it would benefit you only with something that Allah had already prescribed for you, and that if they gather together to harm you with anything, they would harm you only with something Allah had already prescribed for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.”
Narrated by Tirmithi, who said it is true and fine hadith
In a version other than that of Tirmithi it reads:
“..Be mindful of Allah, you will find Him before you. Get to know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity. Know that what has passed you by was not going to befall you; and that what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship.”
Bismillaah
Is it possible to ask UWT to give the option of donating to all three countries as some sisters are enquiring about this?
I just checked and that option was not there.
Wa Jazaakumullaahu khayran
Please email the vice chancellor and demand for a bigger room and better facilities somewhere in the main building.
vicechancellorsoffice@city.ac.uk
p.s. don’t complain too much but only make a kind request!
It’s easier for UWT to identify and sort the donations for the specific projects using the current options.
If the sisters are from City or have contacts with people in City, then they can give the amount to the ISoc committee as the money that is collected by City ISoc will be divided equally for the three projects inshaa’Allaah.
WaAllaahu a’lam.
[We have however sent a message now to UWT about this suggestion]
Jazaakillaahu khayran
Bismilllah wasalaat wasalaam alaa’ ashraf al anbiya’ wal mursaleen,
With regards to what the ex-City student has said, its my humble opinion, and i accept that i may be alone in this thinking, that we shouldn’t be emailing the Vice Chancellor making such demands, as i am concerned that this may have a detrimental effect. I feel the best thing is for the Muslims to unite and direct their requests and concerns through the ISoc and the Ameer. We are working with the university, and have another meeting with them on Monday inshallah, and they have agreed and assured us that a Prayer Room in the main building is a long term target of theirs, so let us give them a chance to come good on their promises before bombarding them with requests and complaints as only Muslims can!
And brother Hammad, its good to hear from you akhee… its been too long!! Give my salaams to the QM brothers inshallah (I’m al-masry!!)… and if you want to lose at football again you’re more than welcome to visit us bi’ithnillah!!
Remember the injured brothers in your duas… Wasalaamu alaykum.
I don’t go uni yet, gna go next year InshaAllaah but I pray that the brothers that got attacked are doing well, and may Allaah increase them in good and make this incident to be a cause for them to get closer to Him SWT. Ameen.
Asalaam, I was just listening to the audio ‘Allah Will never disgrace us’ and want to know what is playing in the background, such beautiful recitation. I hope everyone hears the audio, it is a very moving message. MashaAllah.
Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.
Those that are not on the sisters mailing list and did not recieve an email late last night, please email the Ameerah on: cityisoc.sisters@gmail.com
Also, I know that the sisters in the ISoc are taking steps to ensure all muslim sisters on campus, regardless of whether they come to the prayer room or not, and regardless of whether they are a ‘member’ of the ISoc or not, know of the situation and Our Ameers order.
However, this can not be done alone, so i ask every single sister here now, if u know of any sister in City University who may be unknown to the situation, please please inform them.
Wallaahu A’lam

JazakAllah Khair, Its so peaceful to listen to. Thank You.
Abu Ibraheem - How you doing akhee, you still have your sense of humour Masha’Allah, We shall be visiting you soon, so dont you worry about that! We pray Allah SWT gives you istiqamah during these testing times.
Please pass on the message to your ameer that the brothers here will Inshallah go out of their way in assisting you guys if you need anything, and that we are with you through thick and thin.
Please let me know akhee seriously you have our unconditional support!
@ Umm ‘Eesa
Maybe the sisters can donate here… this is organized by Kingston ISoc - same projects and same cause; the money will be split equally for the three projects through this inshaa’Allaah.
http://www.justgiving.com/medicalaid
[Make sure to specify that donation is in support of CITY ISoc, otherwise the kingstonners will win the competition of who raises the most ! ! ! As for which person to support... just write Ameer of Kingston ISoc inshaa'Allaah since he provided this link or anyone else who's taking part]
Hope this helps.
As for emailing the university, it is good to voice our concerns and let them know how we feel and the change we wish to see. But we must do so with the proper Islaamic etiquette without blaming or accusing the University of anything that is not their doing.
Keep in mind that the University has promised to provide solutions, both short-term and long-term. Give them a chance to work on their promise and on Friday the University did send someone to watch over the Prayer Room and they provided for the brothers an alternative prayer room within the Main Building.
Inshaa’Allaah, we will post a full report of what went on during this week on the website soon. Please be patient.
May Allaah reward you all immensely for your ongoing support and concerns.
waAllaahu a’lam.
JazakAllahu Khairen for the regular updates. How are all the brothers who got injured? May Allaah swt grant them shifa’aa and may this be a means of purification for them all, Aameen ya Rabb. If any of their families need anything, please do let the sisters know Insha’Allah.
Allaah swt is our protect and helper and he will decree what is best for us so let us all put our trust in him and turn to him during this testing time, let us all ask him to aid us and thank him for the good that has and will come from this test Insha’Allah. I ask everyone to continue to make du’aa for the brothers and sisters Insha’Allah. May Allaah swt help and protect us all, give us strength, keep us united and firm as an Isoc, grant us ease and sabr and may He swt grant us all success in the dunya and Aakirah, Aameen thumma Aameen.

A request to my beloved City Sisters
An email has been sent out by our Ameerah, which includes a template letter that we can use to give to our lecturers so they can knw the reason as to why we need to leave by 4pm. Plz forward to ALL CITY SISTERS. I think headsis sent it to everyone on the mailing list but as we’re all aware, not all the muslims join the ISoc mailing list for watever reason.
I know we have been texting all the sisters to let them know of the Ameer’s orders but there are many sisters whom we couldnt inform because we didnt have their numbers. So please sisters, forward the email so at least the message may reach those sisters who are unaware inshaAllaah.
Jazakumullaahu khairan
Is it possible to post the email here for sisters that are not on the mailing list?
Please ask the headsister first.
Jazaakillaahu khayran.
Bismillaah
Assalaamu alaikum,
By the decree of Allaah, the news of this incident has reached many. Alhamdulillaah it truly is over-whelming to see our brothers and sisters from all over UK showing their support, we ask Allaah to accept this from you and make it heavy on your scales, aameen.
Just to note, have been told many sisters that rumours are spreading about this incident, some may think they know what happened, but actually dont. So may I take this opportunity for the brothers and sisters that are aware of this incident (those coming on here to hear/read what exactly happened) to refer everyone back to this website to know what exactly happened inshaAllaah. And also advise everyone to listen to the khutbah too inshaAllaah.
May Allaah ease the diificulties of the ameer. ameera and the rest of the issocers aswell as those around the globe, aameen.
WAllaahu alam.
Wassalaamu alaikum
Insha’Allah a sister will post it, if anyone knows a City sister who may not have received it please send it to them Insha’Allah.

I pray this reaches every one of you in the best of health and peak of Eemaan. Aameen
As many of you are aware by now [some of you might not be aware], the ISoc has been hit with a calamity, alhamdulillaah. We praise Allaah in every situation, for that is the state of the believer.
Let me remind you of the words of our beloved Prophet sallAllaahu’alayhi wassalam:
“How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affairs are all good, and this applies to no one but the believer. If something good happens to him, he is thankful for it and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience and that is good for him.” (Narrated by Muslim, 2999)
Remember O sisters in Islaam, that Allaah the Mighty and Majestic is our protector and guider. From Him subhanahu wa ta’ala is all strength. We turn to Him subhanahu wa ta’ala in all cases, so remember O sisters in Islaam that all source of strength is from Allaah.
When a calamity befalls a Muslim, he says ‘HasbiyAllaahu wa ni’mal wakeel’ (Allaah is sufficient for me and the best of those on whom to depend) and we say ‘Inna lillaahi wa inna ileyhi raji’oon’ (Truly to Allaah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return).
Allaah says in the Qur’aan:
“But give glad tidings to As? Saabiroon (the patient). Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: ‘Truly, to Allaah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.’ They are those on whom are the Salawaat (i.e. who are blessed and will be forgiven) from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the guided ones” [al-Baqarah 2:155-157]
Be patient O sisters in Islaam and be united.
Please, please, I cannot stress this enough, please listen to the Friday
Khutbah ( http://cityisoc.com/i-media/khutba/ ). It’s entitiled

Our Appearance is Their Terror [Islaamophobic Attack on Campus]
Saleh Patel [City ISoc Ameer]
Everything will make sense in shaa Allaah. 3/4 brothers got attacked by a group of hoodlums on Monday and on Thursday they came back and threw fireworks at the group of brothers heading home, and 3 brothers got stabbed. Alhamdulillaah all the brothers involved in the incident are fine, for Allaah protected those who stood up for His deen. These attacks have been for no other reason, except that we are Muslims, and the Ameer (Headbrother) has ordered that ALL sisters go home in time for Maghrib salaah, that means ALL sisters must leave uni by 4pm latest.
For your own safety, please take the advice of headbrother seriously in shaa Allaah.
General precautions:
1. Always travel in groups, DO NOT go home alone
2. Leave university by 4pm [attached is a sample email to send to your lecturers in shaa Allaah, edit it as you please and make it personal to yourself in shaa Allaah]
3. Be vigilant, careful and stick together.
4. Be united, for the sheytaan likes disunity and attacks us when we’re on our own.
5. Make constant du’aa to Allaah, remember Him often and increase in your istikhfar (asking for forgiveness) and repentance.
6. Do not despair, for the victory of Allaah is indeed near.
7. Lets be patient and supportive to the brothers.
If you need anything at all, then please feel free to contact me either through email or on my number which is available on request.
I leave you with:
Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn Taymiyah] (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “A calamity that makes you turn to Allaah is better for you than a blessing which makes you forget the remembrance of Allaah.”
Remember the ISoc and the Ummaah in your du’aa’s.

Asalamalaikum
Subhannallah, i want to ask, do the University lecturers know that this attack is solely on the muslims at the moment? ‘Everyone’ is affected, but it is evident, like a racist attack on a black person or a homophobic attack on a gay, that this is solely islamophobia and aimed at the muslims!
Aoothobillah. I emailed my head of dept (LAW) and asked very respectfully that i be allowed to change tutorial times for only 2 tutorials. His response is simply shocking. He has denied permission on the basis that: “This is a matter which applies to all students, not to any specific student who happened to raise the issue, so please await further information; we cannot give you permission to attend another group at this time.” Furthermore he is waiting for an official statement from the university, and not taking my word for it.
Am I missing something?
Assalaamu alaykum,
Bint Uthmaan, I really like your comment ma sha Allaah it makes a lot of sense but Allaahu A’lam, I’m not too sure if we should be asking for tests either to ourselves or to others. Instead we should seek refuge in Allaah from trials and recite the last few verses of Soorah Al Baqarah:
“Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians); our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Maulâ (Patron, Suppor-ter and Protector, etc.) and give us victory over the disbelieving people.[75]” (interpretation of the meaning)
wa ‘alaykumus salaam wa rahmatullaah
The vice chancellor’s email to student and staff was general and the lecturers may require further explanation of the situation.
WaAllaahu a’lam… please forward your problem to cityisoc@gmail.com and the brothers will try to see what they can do.

FOSIS Statement Regarding Attacks on Muslim Students at City University
Sunday, 08 November 2009
The Federation of Student Islamic Societies (FOSIS) regrets to inform that over the past week Muslim students at City University (London) have been the target of a series of attacks culminating with three Muslims being stabbed on St. John Street in the immediate vicinity of the University after being surrounded by over 30 youths. Attacks earlier in the week left three students requiring hospitalisation for severe facial and head injuries as they were set upon by the gang shouting Islamophobic and racist abuse including statements like “Get those Muslims” and “Paki” being used repeatedly; they were subjected to a series of projectile missiles, including bricks, metal poles and sign posts.
The attacks have come amidst calls for the University to increase security and ensure student welfare on campus. The Student Union’s response to the attacks has been both swift and fully supportive of both the Islamic Society and Muslim students. Interim security measures have been introduced by the University and the Metropolitan police who have understood the serious nature of these attacks.
FOSIS calls upon the University to provide assurances for the safety and welfare of all students on campus and request that such measures are maintained permanently, and in communication with the Islamic Society, key areas of concern be identified and addressed.
FOSIS would like to reassure all Muslim students that their safety and wellbeing on campus is of utmost concern and, while it is important to stress that this is an isolated incident, all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that campuses remain a safe and trouble free environment. Over the course of the next day guidance on issues relating to safety will be available at http://www.fosis.org.uk.
Finally, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families and we would like to extend our full support and assistance to them throughout this ordeal. May Allah, the Most High, let this be an expiation of their sins and a means for them to come closer to Him.

1. FOSIS (est. 1962) is the umbrella organisation of student groups in colleges and universities throughout the UK and Ireland, representing over 90,000 Muslim students.

Assalamu alaikum brothers and sisters at CityIsoc may Allah reward you for your steadfastness and ability to remain through these troubled and dangerous times. We must remember that the remembrance of Allah swt is a cure for these calamities indeed ‘Hasbunallaahu wa ni3mal wakeel’- Allah is sufficient for us. What is the ISOCS current position at the moment bearing in mind the perpetrators are still at large and I myself and my friends are familiar with this area and this is a very random and strange occurrence. What is the ISOC planning to do and what precautions has it taken to reassure its members and the general population at CITY that its safe to roam the streets without fear of attack. It has shocked me that these stabbings and islamaphoibc attakcs could ever take place in the city, my friend was amongst those beaten up and i saw his face which reall saddened me. If theres anything brothers can do from the other university isocs and general muslims please let us know. We would like to show support through solidarity and unity and provide security inshallah.
Laa tahzan! Innallaaha ma3ana. Dont be Sad! Verily All is with us.
Police investigate gang attack on Muslim students in London
Three people stabbed in incident near London’s City University involving 30 black and white youths
A police investigation has been launched following apparent racist attacks on Muslim students in London in which three people were stabbed.
In the worst incident, last Thursday evening, a mob of 30 white and black youths is said to have surrounded Asian students near City University in central London and attacked them with metal poles, bricks and sticks while shouting racist abuse. Three people ? two students and a passerby who tried to intervene ? were stabbed.
The attack was the culmination of a series of confrontations over several nights near the university. Earlier in the week a group shouted abuse at a Muslim student going to a prayer room at the university and then attacked him and other students escorting him to the tube. In that incident one student suffered a fractured skull.
The Federation of Student Islamic Societies claimed that the gang of youths shouted: “Get those Muslims,” and “Pakis.” It called on the university to provide assurances for students’ safety and welfare but described the incidents as isolated.
Qasim Rafiq, Fosis’s spokesman, said: “We believe these attacks involved the same group but there have been sporadic attacks at other universities over the last year. We are in consultation with the police and university authorities and want reassurance that the measures they are putting in place to protect students are permanent, not just temporary.”
The Metropolitan police said that patrols were being placed in the area and searches were being conducted. Detective Inspector Trevor Borley, of the Islington police community safety unit, said: “We are taking this matter very seriously.”
Three teenagers, aged between 17 and 19, have been arrested.
In a statement, City University authorities said they were shocked and saddened by the attacks and had increased security patrols of the campus and at prayer meetings. Prof Julius Weinberg, the acting vice-chancellor, has written to all students advising them to be extra vigilant.

Students targeted in racist attacks
(UKPA) – 1 hour ago
Police have been investigating a series of violent racist attacks on university students.
Patrols have been stepped up around City University in Islington, north London, after several young Asian students were targeted.
The first attack took place in Gloucester Way, adjacent to university buildings, shortly after 6pm on Monday, November 2, when, police said, a group of black teenagers shouted racist abuse and threw bricks at a group of Asian men.
A 21-year-old man was taken to hospital after suffering head injuries and bruising to his legs. Three others escaped uninjured.
Police said the same group of teenagers were involved in an incident minutes earlier when racist abuse was shouted at students in a university prayer room.
The second attack took place on Thursday, November 5, when a mob of up to 30 youths confronted several young Asians in St John Street. Officers were called shortly before 8pm to reports of a fight involving a large group of men armed with sticks and metal poles. Four Asian men were taken to hospital suffering stab wounds and two others suffered cuts and bruises.
Superintendent John Sutherland, of Islington Police, said: “We’re treating both incidents very seriously. “We have made a number of arrests in connection with Thursday’s incident and the investigation is ongoing.”
Detective Inspector Trevor Borley, of Islington Police community safety unit, said: “We are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed either of these incidents to call us on 020 7421 0107.”
A City University spokeswoman said: “We’re shocked and saddened that some of our students have been the victims of an attack near the university. The university is taking this matter very seriously, the safety of students and staff is very important.
Three men aged 17, 18 and 19 have been questioned and released on bail over the attack on Thursday. They are banned from approaching the university premises.

Salaam alaykum,
This is really upsetting. Does anyone know why in particular the Muslim students at City have been targeted by this gang? I cannot understand, was it completely unprovoked??

a) jazak’allahu khairan. i errr, hate to be awkward, really, and it’s not necessary that you publish this if you’d prefer not to..but i ask you to be a bit more specific if u can insha’allah.
has the bruising to the brain died down? has it had any detrimental effect? and the glued up skull..it’s better, right? and the memory loss..only temporary? nothing long term..?
i’m sorry but u can’t tell a mechanic of the mind that people have taken bruisings to the brain or suffered memory loss etc and expect them to not worry beyond your average jack =/ not possible i’m afraid! walhamdulillah.
anyhow, if the brothers concerned don’t think it’s an invasion of their privacy, then i request some specifics regarding their well-being insha’allah. may allah [swt] envelope them in His abudant mercy, ameen.
allah is a witness over us, and allah knows best.
jazak’allahu khairan
salaamu’alaikum
Bismillah
Something to think about inshaAllah..
It has saddened everyone who has heard about the events, whether it was people who know the brothers or don’t..such is the love of the ummah walhamdulillah.
When the brothers were injured, severe or not…they were able to receive the help they needed in terms of medical aid, whether it was late or maybe it wasn’t as efficient as it should have been but the point is they got it and by the provisions and bounties of Allah they are being treated accordingly alhamdulillahi rabbil alaameen.
The wisdom in the timing of these events should be noted…it happened during charity week, not charity for any cause but rather specifically for medical aid in areas it is in dire need of. When something like this happens in those areas, or when people are suffering not only at the hands of hoodlums but of general poverty they don’t have these facilities and nor can they even imagine and look forward to some help or treatment. I therefore ask everyone including myself to take this opportunity to reflect and do something, not only for those people we personally know or have some kind of link to us but the whole of the ummah for that is true unity and brotherhood.
Alhamdulillah the ISoc have made this available through the ongoing project which needs your help and donations, make the difference for them now.
All which I have said above is to myself first and foremost.
May Allah keep the ummah steadfast upon the haqq, in unity and brotherhood aameen.
@ bint Haroon….SubhanaAllaah. Jazaakillaahu khairen for sharing your thoughts with us!
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
Anyone who has started receiving emails from the SU ‘thanks to’ City ISoc - pelt tomatoes at em!
When you’re done doing that, check your email… SU’s been in touch regarding last weeks happenings…
ermm what does that mean?
outweb/webmail email?
a) The head injury brothers are fine alhamdulillaah… walking, eating, sleeping well and even coming into university! Cannot go into any more detail.
The other brother lost his memory of the time when the thugs were beating him up and he cannot recollect anything about that… Maybe his brain blocked it all off.

Message from the President of City University London’s Students’ Union and the Acting Vice-Chancellor of City University London
University students were victims of assault near the University in St John Street.
On Thursday 5th November at approximately 7.45pm, some University students were victims of “racially aggravated assault” near the University in St John Street, two sustained stab wounds described as “non-life threatening”.
Three males, who were arrested following the incident in St John Street, EC1, have been bailed to return to police on 4 January 2010 with the following conditions:
* Not to go within 100 meters of City University London, Gloucester Way, EC1
* Not to contact any student from City University London, Gloucester Way, EC1
* Not to contact any prosecution witness
We’re shocked and saddened that some of our students have been the victims of an attack near the University.
The University is taking this matter very seriously; the safety of students and staff is very important. University security has increased its presence at prayer meetings and has also increased the volume of its campus wide patrols. A team from Islington Police Safer Neighbourhoods is undertaking extra patrols from 2pm to 10pm each day this week in the local area. We are of course working very closely with the local Police on this matter and as it is a criminal matter, we continue to take their guidance.
The Islamic Society of City guidance that Sisters should leave the University by 4pm is not University advice. Students affected by this incident should either speak with their module leader, personal tutor or Students’ Union and they will be treated sympathetically and in line with University guidelines.
The University continues to work with its Students’ Union on the welfare of its student community and has moved the location of Evening Prayers whilst it is seeking a new location for the Prayer Room.
City University London has a culture in which diversity and equality of opportunity are promoted actively and in which unlawful discrimination is not tolerated. Our policy can be found at: http://www.city.ac.uk/hr/policies/equality-diversity/equality-diversity.html
It is also worth remembering that London is on the whole a safe, friendly and welcoming city. City University London community works well because we are tolerant, supportive and enquiring; we must not lose those values, nor allow an incident such as this to spoil enjoyment of life at the University and in London.

Their reference to ‘Sisters’ is rather surprising..
Anyway, if the head brother & isoc insist that the sisters leave by 4pm, then that is what we will continue to do, insha’Allah.
@ i-Slaam
A few years ago, I had a head-on collision with another car, and to this day I cannot recollect the actual accident, only what happened immediately before (seeing the other car) and afterwards (getting out of my car). My front-seat passenger did not suffer any memory loss. I always felt that this was a mercy from Allah, that He made me to forget. Maybe it would have been too painful as a memory but waAllahu alam.
Jazaakillaahu khayran. No doubt what happened on thursday was a painful day for all. Alhamdulillaah, Allaah has protected and shown mercy to you and the brothers.
And we pray that you have fully recovered from the incident and that Allaah protect you and us in the years to come. Aameen.
JazakAllahu Khairen for the updates.
Are all the brothers out of hospital? And do you know if their families need anything? Please do let them know that the sisters are here if they need us and that they’re all in our du’aas Insha’Allah.
May Allaah swt have mercy on us all, forgive us and protect us, Aameen ya Rabb.
Assalaam bro
from what i been told they’re doin ok. like ok ok! alhamdulillah. dont think no1 was kept in hospital long term and as the bro said some of them back at uni etc. so fikkar not, allah will help =)
Alhamdulilah.
JazakiAllahu Khairen for letting me know ‘Dust’ =)
Forgot to say: WalaikumSalaam WaRahmatullah…
How were the sisters at uni today? Pray you’re all well. Let me know if you need anything Insha’Allah.
Assalamu ‘alaykum
jus a quick question (has nothing to do with this post)..
I was wondering who’s teaching the fiqh of salaah course tomorrow inshaAllaah?
wa ‘alaykis salaam wa rahmatullaah,
check this page inshaa’Allaah… the poster is included in the gallery.
http://cityisoc.com/upcoming-event/fortnightly-courses/
[on the side note, sisters will not be allowed to return after the 'Asr break and are expected to head home]
[Silly comment allowed as a one-off to lighten the mood. Follow-up comments will not be allowed. No hard feelings.]
As salaamu alaykum
The measures bought in sound temporary, as in will the police/security patrol everyday forever ? Is it feasible for brothers to always leave in a big jama’ah ? I doubt it.
So just a reminder to still keep your guard up brothers and sisters in the next few weeks for the years to come. may Allah help us all
Salaams,
Is the press release going to be released today by any chance?
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
So if they believe in the like of that which you believe, then they are rightly guided, but if they turn away, then they are only in opposition. So Allah will suffice you against them. And He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. [Surah Baqarah, ayah 137].
Bit random, but reassuring. Walhamdulillah.
The brother said the press release will be released tomorrow. Allahu A’lam.
Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa barakatuhu,
I pray you are all in the best of health and Eeman,
We have been asked to be interviewed by a number of news agencies. I have written this in preparation for it.
It is important to never forget what our beloved prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) was sent on this earth for. To make Islam dominant over all other deens. Many muslims today take an apolegetic approach when asked about Islam. We must always answer with Hikmah, but at the same time remember that we are not here to ‘Fit in’.
May Allah except our efforts. Please remember me in your Dua’s.
Jazakallahu Khairun
—————————–
This incident is unfortunate, but expected. We cannot look at it as an isolated event, because there is more to it that that.
Post 9/11 we’ve seen media attacking Islam in various ways; portraying us as people secretly wanting to blow everything up.
Moreover they have been attacking our values. Our view of women to the extent that our sisters are afraid to wear hijab, more recently the burkha (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23753441-italys-right-starts-move-towards-ban-on-burkas.do) Also Segregation Mp Jim fitzpatrick (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8201461.stm)
We see a trend of not only the media but also government officials talking about certain aspects of Islam being backward and needing reforming.
We are students at a university, but We’ve seen so much anti-terror legislation and media-hype about Muslims being terrorists, a group of thugs attacking us physically is inevitable. The EDL have been protesting outside Mosques, the leak of Contest 2 etc (http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/feb/17/counterterrorism-strategy-muslims) is all testament to the fact that Islam is under fire. This is not only a minority that is a problem for the government (as the government suggests) but rather it is the core beliefs that Muslims hold and the Muslims need to understand this. The government strategy is to show those with the correct Islamic beliefs as extreme (Contest 2 bulletpoints) and to make Muslims feel as though they need to go against them to fit in.
Our response is straightforward. We are students studying here for education. Islam tells us to respect our neighbors but it must be known that We will not point fingers at ‘extremists’ in the Muslim community as we refuse to be categorized by the government or anyone else for that matter. We as Muslims will never compromise our beliefs.
Your brother in Islam, Wasif
jazakallahu khairan bro Wasif for your thoughts. my sentiments exaclty!
Islam teaches a superior way of life! How beautiful this religion is, more beautiful than I could ever have imagined.
Salaam Alaikum,
This is disturbing but not surprising news unfortunately. Islamophobia is rampant, unchecked and even institutionalised. It is essential that even when this matter is resolved locally that it is not forgotten. There are organisations involved in campaigning against Islamophobic hate crimes such as Muslim Safety Forum and we’d very much appreciate someone from the Uni getting in touch with us so we can ensure that the matters is properly dealt with by the police and more importantly so we can present the facts of discrimination against Muslims in what should be our collective struggle to get equal protection before the law. It would be helpful if these incidents were also reported to IHRC and the Muslim News.
Your brother,
Abdurahman Jafar
Bismillahirahmaniraheem,
ASalaam alaykum to all the brothers and sisters and may Allah ease the pain of those who were attacked. May Allah give safety to all the Muslims wherever they are, Ameen.
All praise is due to Allah and I send salutation upon his prophet and messenger prophet.
Ibn Al Qayyim has a wonderful piece entitled lessons from the battle of Uhud, which can be read here : http://mercyprophet.com/detail.php?siteid=481 The Sheikh wonderfully summarises some great wisdoms from the day of Uhud when the Muslims were defeated and demoralised. He shows how what may seem like a calamity could infact have many hideen wisdoms and beneftis. Without comparing this incident to the testing of the companions, I have similarly summarised some quick lessons from this testing:
Some lessons from this testing:
1. That Allah may purify the Muslims and cleanse some of their sins. When the believers are tested with a calamity, then Allah forgives them for some of their sins if they are sincere. And who from amongst us does not sin?
2. That Allah may give some believers the opportunity to earn good deeds and so that their trials turn into immense rewards on the day of judgement. And look how full of wisdom our lord is; many people who might have never have heard off this University or ISOC could give donations and charity, which could save the lives of Muslims in far off lands.
3. That the believers return to Allah and engage in more recitation of the quran, and dhikr and giving charity to the needy. People generally increase their worship in times of difficulty. However, the loftiest of stations are those who are equally thankful and mindful of their lord in times of difficulty and times of ease.
4. That the hearts of the Muslims are healed and so that their togetherness and the numbers praying in congregation increases. Perhaps it could be more people will attend your gatherings as a result of this testing.
5. That Muslims become more thankful to Allah, realising that the testing that occurred is small compared to a minute of suffering in many Muslims nations across the world. Therefore, after this he realises the many benefits and ease which Allah has bestowed him with.
6. That Allah opens the doors of dawah and guidance through this testing. Perhaps some people who were never interested in Islam could become sympathetic towards the Muslims and this may become an opportunity for dawa? Alternatively, the very same people who attacked the Muslims could go to prison and end up receiving guidance from Allah? Maybe one day one of them will return to you as a brother in Iman!
7. That Allah may punish those who attacked the believers. This could happen because they could go to prison for this and thus suffer many hardships in life, which will make them regret everything they have done.
And Allah knows best.

11 November 2009
RACIST thugs have launched brutal attacks on Muslim students - leaving them fearing for their lives.
In the latest attack - on Thursday in St John Street, Finsbury, at around 7.45pm - a group of Muslim students from nearby City University were stabbed during two ambushes by a mob of 30 white and black men.
The gang were armed with knives, bricks and metal poles and left six Asian students needing hospital treatment.
Third-year student Ali Elhamamy, 22, of the university’s Islamic Society, said: “We were attacked outside the university’s prayer room earlier in the day with fireworks and bricks. The police were called and they told us that we would be better dispersing in small groups. We split up into three groups of seven or eight and headed off separately in the directions of Angel, Farringdon and Barbican Tube stations.”
But the group on the way to Angel were accosted by a gang of 20 thugs before they could make it to the station.
Shortly afterwards the students heading to Farringdon - who had turned around on hearing about the first attack - were set upon by 30 attackers further down St John Street.
Mr Elhamamy, who was part of the group heading to Barbican, said: “These were vicious attacks. One student was callously stamped on and told by doctors that one more blow to the head could have caused severe damage. Another guy had to have part of his skull glued back together. There was a lot of blood and it was a very scary time.
“Thankfully everyone managed to walk out of hospital this time - even if a couple were on crutches. But next time we might not be so lucky.”
The first attack happened on November 2 when a student was punched as he went to the university’s prayer room. His nose was broken and lip split before he managed to escape into the building in Gloucester Way, Finsbury. When he left after evening prayers with a group of 10 other Muslims they were bombarded with bricks - leaving three students needing hospital treatment for facial and head injuries.
Mr Elhamamy said: “This cannot go on. We are not interested in revenge attacks and just want to complete our studies. We are in constant fear for our safety. The gang shout things like ‘Get those Muslims’ and ‘Pakis’.
“People are scared they will be killed. Some are first-year students who have come from across the UK or other countries and this is not the sort of experiences they should be having.”
Qasim Rafiq, of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies, added: “These have been terrible attacks by ignorant people and we can only hope they are isolated incidents.”
A spokeswoman for City University said: “We’re shocked and saddened that some of our students have been the victims of an attack near the university. University security has increased its presence at prayer meetings and has also increased the volume of its campus-wide patrols. A team from Islington Police Safer Neighbourhoods is undertaking extra patrols from 2pm to 10pm each day this week in the local area.”
Superintendent John Sutherland, of Islington police, said: “We’re treating both incidents very seriously. The Muslim and local community can be reassured by the fact there are dedicated police patrols in this area and crime prevention measures have been put in place with the university.”
Three men aged 17, 18 and 19, who were arrested following the attack on Thursday, have been bailed to return to police on January 4. Conditions of their bail mean they must not go within 100 metres of City University, must not contact any students from the university and must not contact any prosecution witnesses.

The offer still, and will always stand insha’Allah: don’t hesitate to ask of us…don’t deprive us of the reward. May Allah have mercy on you, ameen.

The brother at UWT has added an option called “Most Needy” on their donation form. Selecting this option and donating through it means that the donation will be split in three and used for all three projects.

Thank you for your valuable suggestion.
Bismilllah wasalaat wasalaam alaa’ ashraf al anbiya’ wal mursaleen,
The ISoc Statement is close to being published. Please be patient inshallah, these things take time. Remember the injured brothers in your duas.
Wasalaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah
“Remember the injured brothers in your duas”
I don’t mean to be rude, but the brothers are all good and recovering right?
[Totally confused here]
If anything they should be making du’aa for us, subhanaAllaah they are in a better position then we are at the moment, wAllaahu a’lam.
Make du’aa for the Muslims oppressed, in war, in prison, dying of hunger, in much worse conditions all over the world AND then make du’aa for our brothers at CityISoc inshaAllaah.
“Make du’aa for the Muslims oppressed, in war, in prison, dying of hunger, in much worse conditions all over the world AND then make du’aa for our brothers at CityISoc inshaAllaah.”
well said! wa jazakallahu khairan for your sincerity.
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
Did all the brothers make it home ok today insha’Allah? Just checkin..
Jazak’Allahu khairan

Bismilllah wasalaat wasalaam alaa’ ashraf al anbiya’ wal mursaleen,
Just to let you know that the ISoc’s official statement was to be published today, but the university have blocked it pending a meeting Friday morning inshallah.
Wasalaamu alaykum
a muslim of a dignified character doesn’t always go around asking people to make du’a for him/her but rather he/she must haven an utmost tawakkul in Allah, through the most direct connection which is faster than the speed of light, on his knees and in sujood, begging Him day and night to bless him with whatever is desired!!!! It is more beloved to Allah then using other mediums!
AA
A nasiha for us all:
Know that indeed what has happened is only a Tarbiyya, an expiation of sins & a trial for each individual. So let him be pleased, patient, remove anger, remove sadness & remain steadfast. Let him solely rely upon Allah, for no brick, no pole, no firework, no knife, no harm can approach him except by His will, and let the believer know that whatever happens it is good for him.
“Indeed, Allah is your protector, and He is the best of helpers”. (3:150)
“Did you think that you would enter Heaven without Allah testing those of you who really strived and remained steadfast?” (3:142)
“Or do you think that you would enter Paradise without such trials as came to those who passed away before you?; They were afflicted with severe poverty and ailments and were so shaken that even the Messenger and those who believed along with him said: ‘When (will come) the help of Allah?’ Yes! Certainly, the help of Allah is near!” (2:214)
“…And on Allah let the Believers rely.” (14:11)
Realise and ask…How does one get gold? One must place the Ore in a furnace, put it through some fitn, some extreme heat. However, the heat does not damage the Ore but rather removes the dirt and other impurities, leaving behind a pure and shiny gold material.
“Allah’s object also is to purge those that are true in Faith and to deprive of blessing Those that resist Faith”.(3:141)

assalam brothers
why isn’t your university letting you publish your statement? is it because of any negligence on its part? and what’s with this “severe consequence” thing?
remember what Amirul Mu’minin (as) said, “Mountains may move from their position but you should not move from yours.” {Nahj al-Balaghah (s.11)}
Allaah knows best.
Salaam alaykum,
To be honest, I’m a little disappointed by the decision not to publish. I am a fully covered City student, and I use the prayer room facilities. I have late lectures twice a week and have so far been following the ISOC advice on leaving before dark. I thought the statement would help me understand why the Muslim students at this University were targeted in particular? What do gangs of black and white youth have against us?
Having said this, I know that everything happens according to Allah’s will, and Alhamduillah. The ISOC represent us and I feel as though they are trying to look out for all of the Muslims. Maybe it is better for us, waAllahu alam. We love eachother for the sake of Allah. I respect their decision and will follow their advice, insha’Allah.
i just don’t understand, how can your university stop you from letting everyone know what happened? we have the right to know what went on. people’s safety and education at stake here! this is a joke.
assalam brothers
Jus let the brothers in charge do what they feel is best. They are concerned about all the muslim students and so would always have their safety and well-being in mind.
Joke or not, there is a reason why the brothers felt it will be best not to publish a statement, so we should respect that and give them our 100% backing.
Jazakallah Khair.
assalam brother
on this site’s right-side bar it says:
from that it seems the brothers at city were told by their university not to publish the statement, so it was not really their decision and it looks like they didn’t really get to decide much. am i right?
jazakallah
Yes. It seems as though the brothers were ordered not to release a statement. Not only that, but it also seems as though the University has threatened them with “severe consequences,” if they do release a statement.
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
Excuse my intrusion, but no brother I love Ahlul Bayt, you’re wrong.
The University made a decision yes, and it voiced the decision as a warning of sorts to the Islamic Society; that should the statement be made public, then there would be ‘consequences’. Penultimately, the decision was with the Univeristy, but ultimately, it was, and is, with the Islamic Society.
Now it is not difficult to deduce that the Islamic Society has been left in a predicament as to what it should do, voice the anguish of the Muslim brothers harmed in the attacks, and thus face repercussions at a wider scale; or to keep schtum and thereby hope to save the masses of Muslims that study or work at the University, from harm. So inadvertently, it is as you have said, unfortunately the decision seem to have been made for them.
Nonetheless, I remind you all, may Allah have mercy on you, to remain vigilant of the rights of Allah and His Religion, to keep your duty to Him, to abide by the Sunnah of the noble Messenger [saw], and to remain patient and steadfast. No doubt, these are trying times for the Muslims at City University, but in every sphere and every activity, our victory is always from Allah. So sabrun jameel, Allah will not cause the struggle of our brothers’ to go to waste.
And the rest is with Allah, and in Him we place our trust.
Allah is a witness over us, and Allah knows best.
Subhanallah I have mis understood this whole situation, forgive me.
Asalaam, Am i missing something? The last comment I read about the press release is that it’s pending, so what’s all this about it not being published and the serious consequece stuff? Where’s all this coming from and what’s happening now???? I’m sorry but I seem soo00oo lost!!!
Assalaam alaykum,
Correct me if I’m wrong but as far as I understand, the statement was ready to be published, brs had a meeting with uni officials who told them not to publish the statement for whatever reason (’severe consequences’) therefore brs. have decided to leave the statement in order to ensure that life on campus for Muslim students doesn’t get hard(er)
And Allah knows best!
W.salaam
Sister Nasima there is nothing to worry about, please read what ‘Sir Spam Alot’ stated in her comment and make du’aa Insha’Allah.
Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem
At the risk of sounding redundant, did the brothers make it home ok, insha’Allah?
Jazak’allahu khairan

^^ Jazak’allahu khairan for the update.
what’s happening with the curfew [for sisters]?
Wait for your headsister to delegate the information to you inshaaAllaah [after the sister recieves any updates regarding this issue].
Assalaamu’Alaikum WaRahmatullahi WaBarakatuhu,
It will continue until the end of semester Insha’Allah. All sisters need to leave uni by 4pm latest, as requested by the Ameer and as advised by Shaykhs and Students of Knowledge. For further information please email: cityisoc.sisters@gmail.com. Pass on the message to all City Sisters and continue to make du’aa Insha’Allah.
JazakiAllahu Khairen, Wassalaamu’Alaikum WaRahmatullahi WaBarakatuhu.
A reminder: This is only for the safety of the sisters and is a way to protect you all Insha’Allah. Our respected Ameer has asked the sisters to continue to leave early and there is wisdom behind this Alhamdulilah, so please ensure you abide by what has been said Insha’Allah. And your reward is with Allaah swt.
Correction @ Umm Safwaan
Sisters are to leave uni by 4pm latest and not be at home for 4pm.
Its important to get the right message across so sisters are not confused. wAllaahu a’lam
And remember sisters that this is our test from Allaah, it’s nothing compared to what the brothers are going through/went through.
Now it’s not even about listening to the Ameer (which we should all do), but it’s about our safety. So don’t think of this as a bad thing but see the khair in it and trust me you would benefit from it much much more than you think or would expect.
And Allaah knows best
[Sisters having difficulty with getting home in time for Maghrib or just general with the whole situation, feel free to email the headsister (cityisoc.sisters@googlemail.com) and inshaAllaah she'll help wherever possible]
