Charity Week! 13th October – 20th October
Reading time: 3 - 4 minutes
Every year, the university Islamic Societies in London get together for Charity Week – a week in which we collect money, shave hair and sponsor just about anything (halal!) – All in the name of charity.
Last year, the City University Islamic Society rose over £12,000 for the earthquake victims in South Asia. This year, we will be collecting money for orphans – and we want to raise A LOT MORE. This is where you come in, we are looking for volunteers to help collect money any way we can! - Please send your details to islam@city.ac.uk and we’ll assign you with a duty for charity week. Last year, City University ISoc came 5th in the London ISoc charity league table (with those pesky Doctors from Kings ISoc coming first) – let’s show them what City ISoc are really made of. Donate what you can inshaalah – get involved – ask friends – family – get those rich uncles on board - make this years charity week an unbridled success!
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Blessed is the wealth of a Muslim from which he gives to the poor, to orphans and to needy travellers.” - Al-Bukhari,
“Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” - Al-Tirmidhi
And what better time to give charity, than the last 10 days of Ramandan!
I didn’t think I’d be able to do justice to the importance and significance the last 10 days of Ramadan hold, so rather than trying to; I’ll leave you instead, with the words of the Quran and the sayings of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). It’s the final push – the holiest time of the year; please make the most of it!
Surah 97 – Al-Qadr
- Lo! We revealed the Quran on the Night of Al-Qadr.
- Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is!
- The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. *
- The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all decrees.
- (The night is) Peace until the rising of the dawn.
* Good deeds in this night are better than good deeds performed in 1,000 months which do not include such a night.
“The month of Ramadan has come, a blessed month in which Allah has made it obligatory for you to fast; in it the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained. In it is a night better than a thousand months, whoever loses the benefit of it has lost something irreplaceable.”
[Narrated by Imam Ahmad and An-Nasaa'i]
“Whoever stood in prayer on the night of Al-Qadr, in faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, he will have all of his previous sins forgiven.”
[recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]
“Aisha reported: “When the (last) ten started, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would tighten his izaar (i.e. he stayed away from his wives in order to have more time for worship), spend the whole night awake (in prayer) and wake up his family.”
[recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]
And she said: “Allah’s Messenger used to exert more (in worship) on the last ten than on other nights.”
[recorded in Sahih Muslim]
