Can Women Wear Jeans !?
Shaykh ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan al-Jibreen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about the ruling on women wearing jeans. He replied:
“As for women wearing pants or trousers, this is not permitted, even if she is on her own or in front of other women or her husband, except if she is in a closed room with her husband only. Apart from that, it is not permitted because it shows the details of her body and makes her get used to these clothes. So she is not permitted to wear these clothes at all.” (al-Nukhbah min al-Fataawaa al-Nisaa’iyyah, p. 30).
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih ibn ‘Uthaymeen was also asked about the ruling on women wearing any kind of pants or trousers. He (may Allaah have mercy on him) answered:
“I think that women should not wear trousers at all, even if there is no one with her apart from her husband, because this is imitating men. The ones who wear trousers are men, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed women who imitate men.”
[Majmoo’ Fataawaa wa Rasaa’il al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen, part 12, p. 287]
Can Men Wear Trousers Below Their Ankles ?
Isbaal means making the clothes so long that they come beneath the ankle. The prohibition on isbaal is mentioned in the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Whatever part of the lower garment comes beneath the ankles is in the Fire.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5787. This warning does not apply to something that is makrooh or permissible, rather the warning of Hellfire usually comes to the one who does a haraam action.
If a man says, “I am not doing it to show off,” he is praising himself and that is not acceptable. The hadeeth is general in meaning and includes everyone who lets his garment hang down, whether that is out of pride or otherwise.
With regard to the one who lets his garment hang down out of pride, his punishment will be more severe. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Isbaal may apply to the izaar (lower garment), shirt and turban. Whoever lets any of them hang down out of pride, Allaah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 4085; al-Nasaa’i, 5334; with a saheeh isnaad.

What about wearing trousers underneath the abaya/jilbaab. Is that permissible?

Jazakallahu Khayran
What about when one is walking and their jeans shows or when it is windy, are they held accountable for that?
Please remain patient until we get an answer for you inshaa’Allaah.
Also, the extract says that one can not wear jeans/ trousers in front of other sisters, can this be further explained inshaAllaah, is this for her own hayaa and exposing herself or other reasons?
Wa JazakAllaahu Khair.
In reply to your second question, the answer is in the extract itself:

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem
With all due respect to our beloved Shaykhs, our rivers of knowledge, the shining pearls of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), the revivers of the Deen, our teachers, our elders; Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen and Shaykh Ibn Jibreen (may Allaah send mercy upon them and be pleased with them, Aameen), then we should know that sometimes their lies a fatwah, a ruling on a matter, which can be khaas (specific) for a type of people and not for another, as fataawah are dependant upon the condition of the people and their environment.
The topic of wearing jeans for sisters is an example of a fatwah that is specific for one people but not for another. I shall explain inshaAllaah. The women in the middle east, especially in Saudi Arabia are known not to wear jeans or trousers. Infact, jeans and trousers in Saudi Arabia are something which is a clothing that is khaas (specific) for men and has been since they have come around. Not only that, but in Saudi Arabia it is not the trend for even men to wear jeans, and so some Scholars believe it is an attire, a dress for the kuffaar. Therefore, when the question of wearing jeans for sisters was put forward, our beloved Scholars, the likes of Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, Shaykh Ibn Jibreen and many others issued similar fataawah to the ones in the above article (may Allaah send mercy upon them and be pleased with them, Aameen). This is because this is the culture, the norm, the tradition, the way of the people of Saudi Arabia. Women never wear jeans, they never have, even in seclusion with their mahrum or their families and so wearing them would be a form of imitation, imitating men which is haraam. And so they prohibitted women from wearing jeans and trousers for reasons of imitation, imitating men and the kuffaar.
However, if we now look to the people of the West, then we find jeans and trousers that are specifically made for men and for women. Womens jeans are often different to mens jeans. Not only that, but both Muslims and non-Muslims wear jeans. Both the man and the woman wear jeans. Jeans are not seen as an attire or a dress only worn by men, nor is it seen as the dress of the kaafir like the cross or the sikh turban. The Muslim man often wears baggy jeans that he cuts or folds so that it rests above his ankles. Whereas the Muslim woman wears her jeans or trousers, (which she wears under her jilbaab) to cover her feet and reach as low as possible. There is nothing wrong with this, as the reason for the prohibiton of wearing jeans and trousers that occur in Saudi Arabia do not exist in the west. Women who wear jeans are not considered to be imitating men or the kuffaar. It is for this reason, that some of our Scholars like Shaykh Haitham al-Haddaad and others have permitted the woman to wear jeans under her jilbaab or infront of her mahrum and family, (although some of them say maybe it is better to avoid it). For the reason of prohibition does not exist in the West. And so there is no harm, inshaAllaah, for a sister to wear jeans under her jilbaab or abaayah, or to wear jeans infront of her husband, her mahrum and her family for in the West, jeans is not considered a form of imitation. wAllaahu A’lam.

Assalamu’aleykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu
JazakumAllaahu Khairen i was going to ask, what about jeans or trousers that are specifically made for female and males cant wear them but Walhamudlilah admin has answered that question.
secondly on my travels to saudi arabia i did find that there are some stores who sell female trousers as part of an adornment of a traditional outfit, so on this encounter would it be permissible for women in the east also as its not an imitation of men, but rather specifically a female trouser-outfit
and another example mayby be the sharwa khamiz in front of women and mahrem men would the same prinicples still apply?
As-salaamu alaikum,
What is the ruling regarding ‘unisex’ clothes. Surely if they are made for two sexes then it in some form will be imitating the other gender, so in this light is it permissible to wear unisex clothing
Also, is it permissible for to buy and wear clothes that was made SPECIFICALLY for the other gender, e.g jeans, jumper/hoody?
