Islaam: Complete and Comprehensive

Islaam: Complete and Comprehensive

( … )

Shaikh ‘Abdu’r-Rahmaan wrote, “Islaam with which our beloved messenger sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was sent is a religion which is shaameel (comprehensive), kaameel (complete).”

The Cambridge Online Dictionary defines the word comprehensive to be “complete and including everything that is necessary”.

Buddhism for example, is not a comprehensive religion, because it does not teach us everything, such as finaincial aspects, social aspects etc.

Christianity as it exists today is not comprehensive, even though it was at first a comprehensive religion.

In England, a few centuries back, by law Christians were not allowed to deal in usury (Jews were made an exception of, because apparently Judaism allows dealing with usury). They caved in at the end and usury prevailed in the UK. Europe has a very bad history of clashes between Church and “State”. Weak people were oppressed and were taken advantage of. At the end of the struggle Christianity was subdued, and all its political aspects were taken away, until it became only to be known as the official religion of the country and that’s about it. They have no power over politics or economics, so much so that now they have gay and lesbian ministers and bishops! They made a deal with the devil saying that we will look after religion and you look after politics and now they are paying for that deal. Now these people are messing around with their religion! They have no power to say that you cannot have gay and lesbian bishop just as you cannot have a Muslim priest!

Islaam is not just about coming into the Masjid (Mosque) praying five times a day and then going out smoking, drinking and committing zinaa (illegal sexual intercourse). It covers our life from the moment we wake up until we go to sleep. The moment one says “there is no diety worthy of worship except Allaah”, what he is saying effectively that “I am completely submitting my will to Allaah and I will do whatever He asks of me” (not only in the Masjid!).

Say (O Muhammad): “Verily, my Salât (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Alamîn (mankind, jinns and all that exists).
[Soorat al-An'aam (006:162)]

Islaam was revealed to the Prophet sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), how to pray, how to collect zakaah, who to take it from, what to take and what not to take, who to distribute the zakaah to, how to fast, how to perform Hajj, how to celebrate ‘Eed, how to buy and sell, what are subject to the rulings of usury, how farmers should sell their harvest, who inherits and what they inherit, how to get married, who to get married to, who to punish for what, theft, murder rape, adultery etc.

Detailed rules were laid down.

In the Qur’aan every single details of inheritance were mentioned in detail and yet people turn around and say Islaam has nothing to do with politics and is not comprehensive!

Nearly all books of Islaamic Jurisprudence end with the chapter of Judicial System in Islaam. How does a Judge behave, what he should accept as evidence, how should he pass on the ruling, who should enforce the judgement issued by the Judge, how does the Islaamic society deal with the bankrupt person, how to get him off his debt. All of these things were mentioned by the Prophet sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and he brought to us to live by. This is what it means by “there is no diety worthy of worship except Allaah”.

Shaikh ‘Abdu’r-Rahmaan wrote, “The Straight Path, is something the milestones of which have been laid down very clear for everyone to see and all the rulings of it have been labelled in detailed starting from Tahaarat al-Qalb (purification of the heart, by having faith in the Tawheed of Allaah) and ending with the purification from all types of physical impurities.”

And (remember) the Day when We shall raise up from every nation a witness against them from amongst themselves. And We shall bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these. And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’aan) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allaah as Muslims).
[Soorat an-Nahl (016:089)]

… This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islâm as your religion…
[Soorat al-Maa'idah (005:003)]

Beneficial Knowledge

[ By Shaikh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah ]

[Forwarded by a brother...]

Al-Qasim bin Yusuf al-Maghribi rahimahullaah says:

I requested our leader, the shaikh, faqeeh, Imaam, respected scholar, vanguard of the predecessors, leader of the later generations, reviver of the Deen, expresser of rare and wonderful ideas with great eloquence and literacy, the most knowledgeable person I have met in the lands of the East and West, Taqi- ud-Deen AbulAbbas Ahmad bin Taymiyyah al-Hanbalee rahimahullaah:

To point me towards those books which I may rely upon regarding knowledge of hadeeth, and other sciences of the shariah.

Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullaah answered:

All praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.

As for which books one may depend on for the different branches of knowledge, then this is a vast topic, and again, the answer to this varies according to people’s backgrounds in different lands. This is because in each land, one field of learning or way or mode of thinking may be easier than another, but the source of all good and blessings is that one seeks help from Allah in acquiring knowledge inherited from Rasulullah sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam because that is what is truly fit to be named knowledge. Anything else is either not knowledge at all even though people call it so, or it is knowledge which is not beneficial, or it is beneficial knowledge, in which case it is necessarily true that there exists in the inheritance of Rasulullah sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam that which replaces it, being similar to it or better than it.

Thus the person’s effort should be to understand the purposes of Rasulullah sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in his commands, prohibitions and his various other sayings. When the heart is contended that something is indeed as Rasulullah sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam intended, then he should not waver from it as far as possible, whether it is regarding his duties to Allah or to the people. In all branches of knowledge, he should strive to hold firmly to principles narrated from Rasulullah sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam if he is in doubt regarding any matter about which the people of knowledge have differed, then he should supplicate to Allah with the du’aa’ which appears in Saheeh Muslim narrated by Aisha, Radiyallaahu `anhaa, that when Rasulullah ??? stood for the night prayer, he would say: “O Allah! Lord of Jibra’eel, Mikaa’eel and Israafeel, Originator of the Heavens and the Earth, Knower of the Unseen and the Present! You judge amonag your slaves regarding what they have differed in. Guide me to the truth regarding that in which they have differed, for truly, You do guide whomsoever You wish to a path that is straight.” [Saheeh Muslim]

This is because Allah the Exalted has said, as narrated by Rasulullah sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam from Him: “O My slaves, all of you are astray except those that I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you.” [Saheeh Muslim]

As for a description of good books and compilations: people will have heard from me what Allah has made easy on other occasions. I will say this much now, that out of all the compiled books which have been divided into chapters, there is none more beneficial than the Saheeh of Muhammad bin Isma’eel al-Bukhaari? rahimahullaah. However, this alone is not enough to cover all the major principles of knowledge, nor can it fulfill all the objectives of one who seeks to dive deep into the various branches of knowledge. It is imperative that other ahaadeeth, as well as the words of the people of understanding and the people of knowledge of different specialized fields be known, for the Ummah has progressed tremendously in all fields of learning. He whose heart Allah enlightens He guides him through what reaches him; but he whose heart Allah blinds, many books only increase him in confusion and misguidance, as Rasulullah sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said to Ibn Labeed al-Ansaaree rahimahullaah: “Did the Jews and Christians not have the Taurat and the Injeel? So what benefit did these bring them?” [Saheeh Al-Bukhaaree in Khalq Af`aal al-`Ibaad, Imaam An-Nasaee, Imaam Ahmad Bin Hanbal, Al-Haakim, Ibn Hibbaan, as Saheeh]

So we ask Allah Almighty that He sustains us with guidance and firmness, instills in our hearts our correct direction, protects us from the mischief of our own selves, that He does not allow our hearts to deviate after giving us guidance and that He bestows on us Mercy from Him, for He is the Most Generous.

All Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, and His Blessings be on the most noble
