Charity Week 2007

Assalamu Alaykum all!

Once again, that time of the year has dawned upon us! No it’s not the January sales, and certainly not an all new series of Prison Break…it’s CHARITY WEEK!!! Yiipeeeee!!!

Charity Week is an annual event hosted by ULU Isoc in collaboration with Islamic Relief, a prominent registered charity, also responsble for the ‘Making Poverty History’ Campaign, and focuses on not only raising as much money as possible for deprived orphans worldwide; but also helps to develop that special bond between young Muslims all over the UK, irrespective of age, race or gender.

The Excellence of Spending out Charity during Ramadan

1222. Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was the most generous of the men; and he was the most generous during the month of Ramadan when Jibril visited him every night and recited the Qur’an to him. During this period, the generosity of Messenger of Allah (PBUH) waxed faster than the rain bearing wind.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary: This Hadith induces us to do two good things frequently and with full preparation in the month of Ramadan. First, benevolence and generosity so that people get maximum time for worship and reduce their mundane affairs during this month. Second, recitation of the Qur’an and Mudarsah, (reading and hearing the Qur’an from one another) as is done by two Huffaz in this manner. The reason for the stress on the Qur’an is that the Qur’an and the month of Ramadan are closely linked with each other. The Qur’an was revealed in this month.

How much did we raise?

By Hassan Saroya

£10,000? Nope. £15,000? – Nope. £20,000? – Getting warmer. £22,501.40p? – Bulls eye! That’s right ladies and gents, The City University Islamic Society managed to raise a whopping £22,501.40p for Charity Week 2006. No, really – I’m serious – Twenty Two Thousand, Five Hundred – that’s pounds, not rupees. That makes us the top university ISoc in the capital – something we all can be immensely proud of. Our 2005 total was £13,000 – that’s an increase of just under £10,000 – quite an achievement.

Together, the universities in London raised a total of £173,000 - again, an increase on last years total of £130,000.

(3 Children just died of malnutrition.)

Charity Week! – THE LAST HURRAH

We’ve had, once again, a hugely successful Charity Week – any frequent visitors to Angel could not have missed the veritable display of theatre we laid out for unsuspecting commuters on Wednesday – Dancing elephants, Scooby Doo and a maniac with a megaphone – all in the name of charity.

But what’s this? – It ends on the 20th? That’s right folks – today is THE LAST day of Charity week at City ISoc – that’s one last chance to make a real difference in the lives of so many orphans around the world. Please, open your hearts - open your wallets and donate generously to this most needy of causes.

We’re also looking for people to help with street collections on the 28th – please email islam@city.ac.uk for more information.
