Arabic Classes - Level 1 & 2

The Islamic Society of City University will be teaching Level 1 and Level 2 Arabic classes during the first and second semester of the new academic year. This course is a comprehensive and popular course for the learning of the traditional and Qur’aanic Arabic, originally devised and taught at the renowned Madinah Islamic University (KSA). This course shall enable students to become competent in their use of the Arabic Language and to participate and benefit from scholarly pursuits such as Qur’anic exegesis, Hadith, Fiqh, Seerah and History, classical and modern Arabic literature.

Students will learn vocabulary in addition to reading, writing and speaking drills, students will be introduced to basic grammar by combining modern Arabic vocabulary with Islamic terminology used in the Qur’aan and Sunnah. In this course students are expected to complete the full Madinah Book 1 and then complete the full Madinah Book 2 in the second semester.

Tajweed Classes - “Tuhfat al-Atfaal”

The Islamic Society of City University will be teaching an introduction to the rules and essentials of Qur’aanic recitation. Lessons will be based on the widely studied classic across the Arab world, Tuhfat al-Atfaal, by Shaykh Sulaimaan al-Jamzooree. This course will assist the beginning student in the important work of refining their pronunciation and proper recitation of the most perfect uncreated speech of Allaah, the Holy Qur’aan. Students will learn how to recite Qur’aan with its proper articulation and rules, tajweed and tarteel (combining theory and practice) and will after completing the course improve their recitation of the Qur’aan and recite fluently with the rules learned in class, inshaAllaah.

Hifdh- Memorisation of the Noble Qur’aan

The Islamic Society of City University will be providing a hifdh course for serious and committed students who can read the Qur’aan fluently and have at least already studied at-Tuhfat al-Atfaal or its equivalent. In this course students will attempt memorising Juzz ‘Amma with close monitoring and support from one of our qualified brothers. Successful students at the end of this course will progress onto memorising Juzz Tabarak and then al-Baqarah.

All lessons are free of charge and will be taught by brothers within the University who have memorised the entire Qur’aan with respected teachers and Scholars.


 Tafseer of Surah Kahf

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khduri that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on Friday, he will be illuminated with light between the two Fridays.” Narrated by al-Haakim; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 836.

In order to truly attain the vast understanding, meaning and interpretation of this great Surah, the Islamic Society of City University will hold regular weekly tafseer of Surah Kahf classes every Friday, commencing from Thursday the 1st of October 2009. Lessons will be based upon the renowned tafseer of Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen - may Allaah have mercy on him.

Students will are not required to sign up to this course and are simply expected to turn up on the day. This course is open for both brothers and sisters, with strict segregation being observed (two seperate rooms).
